Buying a CANADIAN Lotus!!!

PostPost by: "NS" » Fri Jun 15, 2001 3:21 am

GOOD GOD!!!

I bought my first Lotus from Racing School Owner David Zubick--

IT WAS ONE OF THE STUPIDIST THINGS I HAVE EVER DONE.

The car was advertised in Hemmings motor news, as being a total restoration.
I called, and he told me he just had a few things to do yet-- I didn't
bother to go see the car-- I trusted him, based on his apparent knowledge
and racing school credentials. I sent a deposit.

DUMB DUMB DUMB DUMB.

It was a major ripoff. Not only did he deliver 5 months late, but the car
arrived NOT RUNNING, no interior, badly assembled. By the time I got it up
to snuff, I had spent $5000 above the original $15,000 cost of the car, and
a good 200 hours work. I eventually refunded some money to me after I vowed
to kill him. (Not really, but about to).

The car arrived with the wrong wheels, and two different size tires on the
left and right sides. The brakes were non-functional, there was no lube in
either the differential or gearbox. The gas tank was completely corroded
shut. Etc etc etc ETC. The only thing that was right was the paint job and
the engine (which was admittedly a firecracker).

Beyond that, I nearly was killed once when the back wheel came off-- Zubick
had used incorrect wheel axel nuts to hold the hub on. And again when the
steering wheel came totally loose at the rack at 35 mph.

Fortunately, with the help of an expert Lotus friend, we got it all working
perfectly, and the car was a mother when I was done. No thanks to Zubick.
He never admitted what a crook he was.

Careful buying a used Lotus from any Canadians.

Oh, I forgot to add, to top it all off-- he never had a TITLE/REGISTRATION,
and it was nearly impossible to get a plate for the car in Colorado due to
his neglect in this department.

Neil,

Re. "Careful buying a used Lotus from any Canadians"

I'll assume that the last line of your post (above)wasn't intended to be
directed at Canadians in general. Clearly, one should exercise due care
when buying a Lotus from anyone (Canadian or otherwise).
