Did any other pathetic idiots miss out on the fuel cell deal? I know of
two. Myself and my friend Max. If anyone else is interested I can arrange
the deal again. We only need two more people.
I would appreciate some feed back on how the fuel cells turned out. P

Hey Peter
I missed out, but I also don't remember how much $$ they wound up
being...which would be a limiting factor for me.

Hi David
The cell was $837.50, 10 gallon Pro Cell from Fuel Safe with an
Aluminum container, remote filler, and fuel level sender.
Mark, Bill ,Eric and myself got cells. Bill and myself are in New
England, Mark is from Oregon and and Eric is from ?. I have not
installed it yet but is is sitting in the boot and it really is a
work of art. The Filler neck is in the shape of a lazy Z so that it
lines up with the stock filler neck hole in the body. This requires
that you need to order the fuel level sender as you can't use a
wooden stick to measure the fuel level. No mounts came with the cell
so this subject is still under discussion. I hope to be plumbing the
fuel system in the next month or so.

How I mounted the cells in the 3 Elans I put the cells in over the years..I
had some stainless steel straps made up...about 2 inch wide as I
remember...I bent them so they fitted around the cell and then I bolted the
straps to the body...Woked well and as I recall, the recommended way by
Fuelsafe....you can see the straps...

Thanks for the info Gary. Count me out...I'm spending a bunch already
right now on my engine, and I replaced my tank with a stock tank
sometime in the last 12-15 years.

Not quite on subject, but.... does anyone have info on a fuel tank that sits
between the suspension towers, rather than under the boot floor?
What are the pro's and con's? I guess that the under floor option keeps the
CoG low, but increases polar moment of inertia, anyone tried both and if so
what do you recommend.
Incidentally, I can find no reference to the between towers tank in any of
the comprehensive "official" Lotus documantation that I have- maybe it was
aftermarket stuff?
Cheers,

This requires
When I bought my Fuel Safe cell a few years back, I had them weld
studs to the cell in the (3) original locations. I used 5/16-UNF vs.
1/4-UNF for additional strength. It has worked just fine, as did the
original setup.

I saw this tank twice - in a 2 or 3 year old Green S2, which I drove
around the block, and in a scrapyard. Owner of S2 said came that way. He
felt that it would be safer in a collision, because it was father in and
protected, but did not like the tank over the battery ( battery behind
the seat on S2) He felt any leakage would get fuel into the passenger
compartment, in carpet and padding, and around electricals, whereas mine
would just leak out the bottom at the hole in the body for the tank drain
plug. He also mentioned that he heard of donut failures ripping the tank
open, which impressed me, because I thought the frame below would protect
it. His car and my S3 had so many differences that a comparison was not
possible, or frankly, even contemplated. I was interested in the tank
because of the tremendous increase in usable trunk space, and he was
anxious to trade, but after talking with him, decided against it.
A few years later, I saw one for sale in a scrapyard specializing in
Lotus in Connecticut. They thought it was from a race prepped car, as it
appeared to be aluminum, and had a patch on the bottom. The staff told me
that a half shaft tore it up. They recomended going to the new shafts
with the donut catcher pins.
Re the trunk bottom tank - I have always wanted baffles or a fuel cell,
because when going thru s's with a partly full tank, I can feel the fuel
shifting. I suspect the car might handle a slight amount better if the
fuel did not shift. George 67 S3
