lighting question

Hi,
The front side lights on my car are all corroded so I just got some new
ones. One stupid question - which way do the fit? Each light a little
blind, which side should this blind be on - top, right, bottom, left?
Would someone please pop out to their garage and have a look
More frustration - just got a new clutch master cylinder and went to fit
it only to find out they have sent me the wrong one aarrgghh! The old
unit has a fork at the end of the shaft the new has a thread - hhmm.

I think the little 'blind' is actually a little reflector and should be
fitted so that the lights are somewhat more visible from the sides of the
car. In other words the reflectors are positioned nearest the turn indicator
lamps.
If the only difference between your master cylinders is the operating
pushrod, just transfer the old rod to the new cylinder.

i think the "blind" should be lowest so as to "feed" the light upwards
so as to reflect to the road

Workshop manual shows 'blind' at top, but is that just a
representation? Mine fitted with 'blind' inboard, with lenses of
glass facing outwards. Anyone with a DB Aston (5/6?) as I believe
they were fitted with the same item. Might give a clue. I don't see
the point in directing such a measly glow at the road, better to be
seen from the side!

Steve,
If the new MC is the right bore and everything else is right except for theclevis end, simply push back the rubber boot and w/ a pair of needle nose pliars, compress the snap ring (circlip) inside both cylinders and exchangethe clevis end for the threaded one.
The new boot will slide very easily off the threaded stem and if enough rubber grease is pressent, it will stretch over the clevis end by using a small (1/8"-3mm) flat blade screwdriver. Then it just pushes onto the rear of the cylinder.
Don't throw away the old cylinder. Most of us just rebuild them.

Mine on inside to direct light sideways too.
Seems to make most sense.

I just checked my 66 S3 Coupe, and, FWIW found: The lamp socket has a small reflector that is positioned toward the inside of the body. The lens hasa clear side and a "ribbed" side. The clear side is positioned on the outside. I am 95% confident tht that is the way it came from the factory.

The old push rod is a bit worn with an oval hole so I was sort of hoping
for a new one. Well being an impatient type of chap and wanting to have
the car running this weekend I just swapped over the rod. All up and
running now and hopefully the end of the clutch problems. I have now
discovered something even more fiddly than the circlip on the clutch
slave cylinder - the side light lenses. I could not get them on with out
the chrome bezels popping off. Perhaps this is how Colin designed them
to save weight

Steve
I think the key to getting the bezels to stay in place is not overtighten
the fixings holding the light fitting to the bodywork, because (on my car
anyway) the circular recess that the lamp fits into is not really a large
enough diameter to allow the bezel to seat properly.
Its several years since I refitted mine but I seem to remember using
stainless screws and Nylok nuts just tight enough that the rubber gasket was
hardly compressed.

Sorry Dave, you've been looking at the workshop manual and parts list. Mineas are original spec and the blind is on the inside to reflect the light to the outside (sideways).
