Lotus parts in the hardware store?

I justy finished changing all the fluids on my 65S2 to get back on the road
after 2 years of sad neglectand and have a few little questions.
1. The drain and fill/level plug on my transmission are standard 3/8" pipe
plugs that could be purchased in any plumbing supply shop (hence the title).
Was this an original Ford/Lotus fitment or has a dread previous owner been at
work?
2. The fill plug on the final drive sits very nicely on the top of the unit
where it should be, fractions of an inch (just a few MM) below the frame cross
member which does not have an access hole in it so it is impossible to use it
. Access to the level plug is no easy thing either all of which makes an oil
change a bit of a bear. Did Lotus correct this on later models or is this a
problem through out?
The work is done but I am just curious.
Thanks
Jeff Manuel

Trans - pipe plugs from factory. I drilled the drain plug and epoxied a
stick magnet into it.
Diff - top plug is breather - suggest leaving it alone due to risk of
damaging hole. I use level plug, some tubing and a funnel. When I am
close, I take tube out and stick finger in hole. George

Hi Jeff
Not to sure but I believe that the fill and drain plugs on the
gearbox are standard pipe thread. There should be a fill/level plug
on the back of the differential housing near the left hand side. The
bronze nut on the top of the diff housing is actually a vent.

#1. This is standard. No bodge here!

#2. What you have found on top of the diff is the vent. If you look closely, you will see small holes in it to allow air in/out.

The fill plug is on the back side, still not very accessable, but much better. Remember, like the gearbox, the fill plug is also the level indicator. On later cars, there is a small rectangular hole inside the boot so that itcan be filled more easily. It is time consuming operation, but I have used a small pump oil can w/ a long flexible spout to fill the diff.
