68 plus2 air conditioning

PostPost by: brian wilson » Thu Jul 08, 1999 6:42 am

Hello from Australia,

Has anyone fitted air-con to an Elan Plus2 ?

Is a boot mounted unit available that uses a compressor driven by an
electric motor.

Power is no problem as my obssession has now almost cost $60,000 to restore
with fuel injection modified Webbers and massive strengthening of body with
kevlar foam.

I cannot believe with all those clever people out there, no one has fitted air-con to an Elan.

Also surely someone has heard of an electric (12 volt ) compressor for an auto.

Hi Brian,
I have never seen air in an Elan, but it was very common in the US for
Europa's to have air. The biggest problem is it creates additional stress
on the waterpump. The comments are waterpump replacements every other year
for cars driven 3 to 4 thousand miles a year. The compressor is mounted on
the left side of the engine, where the alternator is located. The belt
includes the crankshaft pulley, water pump and compressor.

Electric compressors. Try http://www.sanden.com, they list one on the home
page. You will probably have to email them for info. If you decide to buy,
and need help, let me know, they are located about 10 miles from where I
live.

Hope this helps.

jeff

We used Saden commpressors in the house heating / cooling / ventilation system.
Not having mains electricity and having a low voltage storage rack we run them off a 24V->110V switch mode. It is also possibe to get 12->110V switch modes with high effeciency.
Mine have run for 2 years trouble free.

PS Jeff,

Sanden state their compressors start at 90 odd volts and are for
electric/hybrid cars, so back to square one!!

Talking of aerodynamic aids has anyone got a Plus 2 with the original
fairing sheets that were fitted underneath around the front and rear
suspension.

I want to try and replicate them for my restoration

Evidently at the first service or before they were removed for various
reasons

There was a Plus 2 130 advertised in (I think) the February edition of
'Classic and Sportscar' (or was it 'Classic Car' in April...) From
memory it was white and described as one of the last ever made, and it
had air-con.

It was a small trade ad in the classified section, so if you are really
keen you could probably get hold of the back issue, find the dealer and
trace the car that way...

Good luck
