Hi!
I am about to rebuild my front calipers on my elan s4.
And I am wondering where I can get hold of stainless steel
pistons for the calipers, preferably in the UK.

Petter,
Try PNM Engineering on Merseyside. www.pnmengineering.co.uk or tel: and fax: 0151 630 6101. No connection other
than as a satisfied customer for the same item and other stainless steel brake parts a few years ago.

Peter,
There is a US-based fellow named John Farrell that makes very nice
stainless pistons for a variety of calipers, including those on our
Elans. You can visit his web site:
http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/ ... 6/id23.htm
or e-mail at ***@***.***
Nice guy to work with. First rate pistons. Best: they are quite
reasonably priced.
My 1969 S4 took the following:
part number 19-1013 fits the front calipers. Cost $26 per piston.
part number 19-1209 fits the rear calipers. Cost $22 per piston.
Farrell's web site list 19-1209 for the Lotus Elan, but doesn't
specify front or rear. Trust me, they fit the rear as exact
replacements. Also, Farrell does not show an Elan listed for 19-1013,
only Espirit and Spitfire. The 19-1013 is the correct piston (exact
replacement) - again, trust me. Lastly, his web site show "
64325703 1.685" Spitfire and Elan 62" but doesn't give his part
number. Ignore this listing.
When I asked John about his "fuzzy" part numbers, he gave me this
disclaimer "My listing is not inclusive of all car models that use
the pistons I make". Whatever the case, he has some good drawings and
the I guarantee that the part numbers I specify above fit a '69 S4.

Petter,
Tony Thompson Racing has for some years sold anodized aluminum brake pistons
for the Elan. TTR's catalog says these are "F-1 spec," and I am not clear
what that means. However, he uses them in his 26R and probably the 27 as
well, both very active in historic racing, so that is I think good
endorsement for their suitability. I have had them in my Series 4. Tony is
in the UK, and they have a web site.
I have no connection with TTR. Good luck.
Regards,
Andres

I hope this helps.
