S1 Bonnet springs

PostPost by: rodlittle » Tue Jul 17, 2012 8:56 am

I have the large original Marston radiator and it seems that the bonnet springs cant possibly go round it to reach the holes in the front of the chassis legs which are normally where they fit to, also the coil is in the way of the RH side spring. does any one know where they are supposed to be attached? The picture in the workshop manual doesnt show them but it does show the large rad and the position of the coil so I know they are correct.
Thanks

Hi Gary
Thanks, I looked at that thread several times before I asked the question and although I agree there are those 2 holes in the top of the chassis I just put the bonnet in place and I guess the LH one would work OK but the coil is in the way of the RH one which begs the question have I got the coil in the wrong place. It seems to agree with the only pictures I have of a coil fitted maybe its just too low. Perhaps if I move the coil right up under the carbs it will be enough out of the way.
thanks again

Lotus mounted the coil under the carbs to increase sales of elans that were burnt to the ground by leaky carbs dripping fuel onto the coil. :)

Worked though didnt it :D
After taking 4 steps backward to get one forward I can now get my bonnet springs to fit, had to move the coil, take out the steering column (well the lower part) to move the handbrake cable and move some wiring, Theres still only a gnats whisker between the springs and the rad but maybe its supposed to be like that.

That's a reasonable description of how it is for me.

Is a gnat's whisker finer than frog hair?
