rear strut noise??

PostPost by: ripley » Tue Aug 07, 2012 11:30 am

Hi all, just finished the seven year rebuilt of my S2. Car drives very well (hell:twisted:) but there is some noise from the back/rear axle when "bumping". First thought it comes from the exhaust but in fact it comes from the springs touching the rear struts. I'm using adjustable coil over struts with matching 'small' springs from TTR. Using larger springs isn't possible because they won't fit onto these struts. My question: Is there a possibility to "wrap" the coil over section to avoid touching by the springs? Any other idea how to avoid that noise??

I have same set-up and problem! Tried inserting thin-wall plastic tubing over struts, worked for a while but having thought about it, will now try using plastic cable "tie-wraps" around the offending coils. Should last longer and be easier to replace.

Its a common problem. And that's a good Idea Pete. I'll have a go at that myself. My TTR fronts do the same too.

I just don't worry about it.

Same problem (I think) on my Plus 2. Thought it was just my car.

Pete, are you thinking to wrap between adjacent coils? Haven't been able to locate the exact cause of the noise and not sure how you guys are going to wrap.

Thx

Can you actually spot the contact points Pete? I can't.

Got to say it does not bother me too much. Mainly a speed-bump issue & front and back for me.!! TT said 'normal' - don't worry about it so I don't..

Might have a go at your fix though. Have you tried it yet?

Working on a wind deflecor today..

Had this for a long time on the rear n/s (with a full rear TT set-up)

I also can't see actually where the contact point is.

Only happens on a rough road (not on track) & I ignore it.

We've tried to get the contact points: It seems that it's the bottom and/or up section of the spring which touches the strut. Apparently the spring diameter is not tight enough(?).
Unfortunately, contrary to you guys, this noise happens not only at speedy bumps but already when leaving my garage/parking, as soon as the street surface isn't equal:(( I don't want to tolerate...

I use the Elantrikbits small dia rear springs conversion which uses springs that are a bit bigger in diameter than the TTR ones but plenty small enough for wheel clearance. No problems with springs hitting the struts, good design Col

Apologies for lack of clarity in my response (we have been on holiday in France for a while, so I am restricted to iPhone typing!). I can see which coils are rubbing because I smeared some greasE onthe strut. I propose to put the cable ties in the (apparent) points of most contact. The tie will go around a single coil and hopefully just act as a sacrificial spacer between the points of contact. What do you think?
Home tomorrow night and back to 8 finger typing!
