Rear view mirrors

PostPost by: bcmc33 » Tue Sep 29, 2009 10:21 pm

Mark,

As I see it. a mirror attached to the tension bar would produce such vibration as to be useless. The vibration from the mirror glued to the windshieild of my car is quite high, OK in daylight but poor at night.

Darren,

I bought a tension bar and bracket that fits to the top rail from Christopher Niel.

Mark,

This may be suitable to fix to the top rail:

Seeing this is the second page of a topic that started in 2006 and no photos yet I went and got some this morning. Most are Elan but there is a Cortina mirror also as it looks like one that I remember but couldnt find, I think it cam with the Ugly flair Coupe that I bought in Canada 6 years ago. I have one that is a wingard that is glued to the screen to but don't know if it came with on of the Elans or where I got it, it sure is ugly.

Gary, the Winguard is the S4 dhc / Europa mirror. I guess it's also used for the Sprint dhc, but not sure about the S3 dhc.

Hi Mark

Thanks for the info, not sure about where it came from. My old S4 45/8221 had a mirror attached to the screen tensioner and I can't remember selling a Europa with out one. The S3 (45/7334) in the photo had the mirror on the tensioner rod also. As with ALL Elans there is no definitive answer as to what is correct. It was shipped on the day it left the factory and what it had, it had. No one can tell you what was in stock that week or if any two were shipped that were the same. Life at Lotus in those days was not sequential, well you have heard this before from me.

Does anyone know what the S1 mirror was like? Mine looks like the one on 26/4045 but I don't know if it's original.

Thanks in advance, ...

Hi PAddy

Interior mirrors for S1 and S2 are the same per the 1966 parts book. The S2 SE is listed as a different part number. So any others I have missed?

My mirror was attached to the top of the windscreen surround by two self tapping type screws.

it is of Lucas manufacture but I can see no part number. It has a dipping action controlled by a lever which has the translucent knob at the end.

Roy, that's from an S1 E type / DB5 Aston from the mid 60s. It may be a bit heavy for the top rail to support!

Mark,

Thanks for that info. It really isn't very heavy, and worked fine when the car was on the road. (Sorry, Gary, I will try to start work on it soon!)
I must say that it didn't look quite right as the mounting is wider than the flat area on the windscreen surround. However, it is a good width and gives a great view behind, as I remember. I won't be selling it to an E type or Aston owner, that's for sure!

My tension rod came loose, and was rotating freely, which may have been the cause of the mirror not holding an adjustment. The total Length is 21.375 inches; the threaded end diameters are .187 with 10-32 threads. The top threads measure 1.5 inches in length at the top and 1/2 at the bottom. I plan to use a lock nut at the bottom to re-secure, and also connect a wire to the lower end leading to the radio to see if the tension rod will work as an antenna. The new lock-nut can be accessed by pulling the dash away a few inches, which might not be possible in some Elans, as I replaced the stock unit with a custom fan/water/core in my 67 S3 dhc. - Gerhart

Hi
Old topic I know but interested to know if anyone has any idea of a source for the anti vibration pad that rests on the windscreen
