Sprint Jack And Tool Kit

PostPost by: archigator » Mon Sep 15, 2003 11:39 pm

Is there a comparable jack for an Elan Sprint that's a little easier to obtain? ie. Is a Triumph Spitfire jack the same as the Elan Sprint jack... it appears exactly the same as the one in the Elan parts manual. However, I've also seen in a book, a jack attributed to a '71 Elan Sprint that appears the same as an XKE jack. All that said, what is the proper Elan jack color?

I also have seen an Elan tool kit on eBay, I believe the wrenches are made by a company called Snail, and are still available in England. Is that true? Is the original toolkit mallet for knockoffs all lead, or a Thor copper and rawhide affair?

Anybody with an original jack or tool kit out there to answer this? Thanks!

Hi not sure about the jack question my plus 2 has a side lift jack as seen in many pictures and my S4 SE has a scissor type jack that is probably availiable in many a scrap yard. As for the tool kit there were two suplliers and Lotus just got hold of whatever they could that was cheap. Snail Brand was one supplier, I don't think you can get them new they are an autojumble item. The other supplier was T Williams now known as Williams super slim. These are definitely availiable brand new but dont look exectly like the original and the ajustable spanner is slightly different also. I can post a pic of the tool kit if you like. Both of my cars had the superslim type spanners in the tool kit.

hope this helps
Mark :D

Yes please elan_fan. If you are still with us I'd be very grateful to see a photo of an original Plus Two tool kit and a list of the items.

Hi "archigator",
Here's a pic of the original jack from my '71 S4 which I would think will be the same as the sprint. It's made by Metallifacture (who still exist) and was I think used as original equipment on many cars of the period. The various applications will use the same basic jack but the cradle will be different depending on which part of the car it was designed to pick up on - this one fits the sill on the Elan. The original colour is grey. Might be worth contacting Metallifacture who might just be able to tell you where else it was used :-

I don't have the original tool kit for my car so I can't help with that.

Thanks elan_fan,

All I'm missing is the wire form screwdriver. Can you believe I actually had one just like yours in my hand at the Lotus Parts Fair last Saturday but a Lotus guru told me I needed the smaller 6" version so I didn't buy it. So near and yet so far.

Your two AF spanners are Williams but mine are branded 'Superslim'.

Thanks again,

Si

Thanks for that,

I was just trying to come to terms with having non original spanners and that's made my day.

Oh the emotional rollercoaster existence of an Elanorak. :D

Si

The correct tool kit is detailed on the very last page of the Parts Manual.

Thanks Tim,

I've not managed to get hold of an original Plus Two Service Parts List as they are quite rare and I'd be terribly grateful if someone would send me a scan of their page with the tool kit details and illustration - just send me a pm and I'll reply from my email address.

Many thanks,

Si
