I plan to do this aswell, I emailed Dave Bean and his advice was:-

"For gas caps, the Elan would use a 2 1/2" size. the Quick release 100Y9839 is $175.99 or the Slap cap 100Y9841 is $261.73 both instock. The brass threaded collar 100Y9850 is $49.06 instock. These are vented caps and all you will need is a metal 2.25" tube to attach the collar. The most reasonable way to ship is Priorty Mail (7-9 days) estimated shipping around $60 for Australia Please let me know if I can be of further help."

I agree with Gordon; the size you will need is 2,5".
I bought mine from "Europa" specialist spares.

The fuel filler cap comes complete with a threaded brass adapter.
The adapter can be fixed to 57mm O/D tubing with epoxy adhesive.
You will also some need very flexible hosing to fit between that tube & the fuel tank. The original rubber hose is not flexible enough to make up the displaced position.
The parts are also available from Demon Tweeks.

On both my S4s, the tube down from the fuel filler was at such an angle that the rubber tube fit properly to the tube from the gas tank.

Not exactly easy to fit. But it shows the subtle differences between what look like similar gas caps, and how it influences interfacing with the gas tank.

The one in the picture does not look like the Lotus item.

Yes you're correct. I bought it new from the address in my original posting.
That retailer also provided me with a length of stainless steel exhaust tubing that fitted exactly into the brass adapter & also the flexible hose.
You will have difficulty finding Aluminium tubing with that diameter, go for the exhaust tubing solution & use epoxy adhesive to fix the brass adapter to it.

If you do find Aluminium tubing that fits, welding would be a no no because:-

1. The differing material thicknesses would make that difficult.

2. The heat generated could destroy the Anodising.

3. Tubing that would fit directly into the cap would have a larger diameter than the existing tube on the fuel tank; so some sort of adapter would be needed to match the flexible hose.

thanks for the info on Europaspares John, I will be in the UK later this year and will arrange then.
Is your cap a vented type (looks like the Aston one on the site) so as to not create a vacuum in the tank? I have a alloy fuel tank without any secondary vent so need to ensure that the cap vents.

Yes it is vented & it works on an unvented Alloy tank.

I would agree if all you are looking for is a filler cap.
If, like myself, you need some tubing, hose & hose clips to complete the job, somewhere like Europaspares can provide all of the bits & you can be sure of them fitting correctly; thus saving a lot of energy & time searching for them elsewhere.
