I am getting conflicting information about water temperature from my radiator temperature sensor and my water temperature gauge. My fan is supposed to come on at 185F and off at 170F, but is coming on even before my water temperature gauge reads 160F. The car feels like the water temperature gauge is correct and that the radiator temperature sensor is off, but I'd like get another reading. What about sticking one of these motorcycle temperature stickers on the top of the aluminum radiator?

Dan, pretty cool product; I didn't know it existed. I would think it would be most effective if stuck on metal that had coolant directly in contact with the other side of its wall.

I was going to suggest one of these:

I have one and it seems pretty accurate, measured against another similar gun of a name brand my friend has.
You only have three strips in package you mentioned but the infrared gun is much more versatile.

I am also a Harbor Freight fan and saw this on their website. Good to know that it is a good product. A friend has a very fancy multimeter, so he is going to check if it reads temperatures, if is does, then I will try that first. This will be plan B. Thanks, Dan

Can anyone with knowledge of how an S4 is wired tell me if and how the voltage regulator works with the water/oil gauge, as I don't see a connection either on the electrical plan or to the gauge. Someone suggested my problem could be a bad voltage regulator. High voltage can cause a low water temp reading, but it doesn't look like on an S4 that the voltage regulator connects to the water/oil gauge. It seems to connect to the fuel gauge and various indicator lights, but that's it. Thanks, Dan

The S4 oil/water gauge is mechanical so the voltage stabilizer is not needed tp power the gauge..

Hi guy's,

I have an infra red thermometer which I purchased to check temperatures on my motorcycles but I find it useful to check such things on my cars such as temperature differential across the radiator, exhaust temps on each cylinder to see if there are any hot or possible lean cylinders tyres, brakes etc etc well worth it but if you do buy one I suggest you get a model with a laser pointer so you can get a clear target area.

Thanks all. Looks like a trip to Harbor Freight is in the cards for this weekend. By the way, is it common for a temperature sensor to begin operating at different temperatures a common fault? I expected it to just stop working, not change pre-determined temperature settings. Thanks, Dan

What I have found is that any tool purchased from Harbor Freight within two years becoms a hammer. I now have a large collection of hammers, the largest being one that started out as an aluminum race (trolly) jack.
