I recently placed an order by telephone with Burton Power in the UK. I have yet to receive the order or see any charges added to my credit card. I e-mailed them and was told that, as a first time customer, they require name and address verification with my credit card company. Apparently this is done by their bank, Braclays. I was informed that my credit card company does not offer this verification information. They now insist upon a wire transfer. At a 10 pound cost at their end as well as 35 dollars from my bank. Not to mention I now loose the protection of a credit card payment, primarily disputes. IN addition I was not contacted with this information. It required me to call them as my order had not arrived. Poor service at least.

I spoke with representative of my credit card company and was informed they do name and address verifications all the time.
To add further insult. When I placed my order I was told that I would pay a higher price as the web prices are reserved for web placed orders. This is ironic as I called them rather than use their web site in an effort to protect my credit card information.

Has anyone had similar experiences with overseas transactions?

Has anyone been dissatisfied with Burton?

I have done business with at least 6 other UK suppliers over the years using this same credit card.

Thanks

Bob

If it's of any interest I have used a German issued Credit Card to purchase items in UK without any of that sort of 3rd degree thing.
Not had any dealings with Burton though.

Experienced exactly the same thing from Burtons, I wanted to but something with a credit card (which has our home address in France) and have delivered to my parents in the UK something that all other suppliers have done without question
I gave up in the end and just went elsewhere!

I received an e-mail from Burtons. They said that when they initially called for the name and address verification it was very early in the U.S. and could not get the information. Something to that effect. The credit card name and address have now been verified and they will be processing my order.

It sounded rather a lame excuse as I am certain they have verified credit card information for other U.S. bound orders.

I now hope to receive the order correctly and with reasonable carriage charges. I will report once the order is received.

This experience has been contrary to the majority of orders placed with companies in the UK.

I have never had a problem buying from Burton's web site from the US and using my credit card.

I bought from them the first time last week and had no issues with a CC transaction apart from having to use my AMEX vs Visa Debit card. On the customer service side the part showed out of stock and my inquiry to sales was responded to with a note that the part was expected this week the latest. - The part was shipped and received here in the states in the same week( last week) !?

I have bought from Burton on several occasions (from Republic of Ireland) and had no issues with credit card payments, in fact i've found them very helpful in sourcing hard to get parts for a pre-crossflow I was rebuilding.

Cheers
Jon

Bob i Know it is frustrating but most suppliers will not ship only to the card address on the first order due to fraud regretably not all people are as honourable as the users of these forums. I would be happy to obtain them for you if you are having problems assuming it is not a new engine block or too bulky my email is ian@skyd.fsnet.co.uk or via www.monarch-stags.co.uk

I appreciate your offer. The parts are being shipped to the same address as the credit card address. Burton's had difficulty confirming the address as the one that is associated with the credit card.

I am disappointed as I was never contacted. They waited for me to contact them requesting the status of my order. Their response to that was that my credit card company did not give out address verifications. This was not true. They do it all the time.

Poor follow up and lazy attitude. A sign of our times.

Bob pleased you are sorted but you are right you get the feeling sometimes no one is prepared to go the extra mile these days or to even do the job they are paid to do.

Bob,
Glad you sorted it out. In defence of Burtons, as Ian pointed out, under credit card rules, the mechant loses out if they send out goods to an address other than that to which the card is registered for 'cardholder not present' transactions (Internet, phone orders etc). The reason is simple, high levels of fraud.

Burtons would submit your address through their mechant acquirer (usually the bank) who takes their transactions and they would send the info to your bank for an automated check. Often this is where the problem occurs; spelling errors, typing errors etc. result in a mismatch. It's essential that the numbers and post (ZIP) code are correct.

If you do have a problem, it's your card provider (the issuer) who is rejecting the transaction as having an invalid address. If you contact them, they should be able to check the individual transaction and this will usually resolve the issue for minor errors.

I received the order yesterday. Once they confirmed the address all ran smoothly.

I am looking for a shifter pivot ball for an integral remote type shifter used in 1967 and on Cortina and some Lotus 7's. P/N 026-F0312.

Any suggestions as to who would sell that?

Bob
