I think I've tracked down an annoying rattle to a loose bolt between the body and tower.

One side has a 5/16 UNF bolt and the other has a 3/8 UNF. Both seem to be in bobbins with 7/16 (untapped) holes.

What size should the bolts be?

Any problems expected if I drill/tap them out to the right size?

Thanks in advance.

Paddy

Hi Paddy

They should be 7/16 UNF. It shouldn't be a problem drilling and retapping the 5/16 hole but you may only get a partially tapped hole in the other.

Look at the following site http://www.carbidedepot.com/formulas-tap-standard.htm

The minimum diameter of the 7/16 is just less than the major diameter of the 3/8 so you may be lucky.

Give it a go, don't forget - lots of oil on the tap!!

Mike

As per Mike's reply, the threads should be 7/16". Just to clarify, the chassis itself should have the tapped/threaded holes with plain bobbin holes. If there's 5/16" and a 3/8" in there, I would suspect a previous owner bodge, so go in with some caution.

Regards

Gerry

Thanks for the replies, all now sorted. No rattle.

Unfortunately "previous owner bodge" is my first assumption for any problem these days.
