Is there a paper gasket either side of the Spacer. I seem to have an oil leak in this area

can you just silicone either side of the spacer

What is easiest to change,what is it like from underneath removing starter rather than Carbs etc

i remember having problems with this before due to cam and spring loaded operating lever making it difficult to line up

Any ideas welcome

Tom, before you pull the pump off just check that the oil leak is not coming from oil return tube (breather) that connects the head to the block, it is just above the fuel pump.

I remember doing this a couple of years back, yes you can silicone either side of the spacer/gasket although it's probably better to buy a new spacer with gaskets attached, and the best way to gain access is to remove the carbs and book your osteopath for a back massage the following day I don't think that access from below is that easy even with the starter removed.

I had the original glass bowl type fuel pump, this was actually leaking oil through the pump rather than the spacer, so it was a replacement job unfortunately with a non glass bowl type as they weren't available at the time. Be careful removing the fuel line unions from the pump and even more careful replacing them as it's easy to cross threads and don't forget to disconnect the battery before you start as there is a stonking great cable that goes to the starter that can possibly be shorted when you drop the spanner for the 10th time.......... Apologies for pointing out the obvious if you already had health and safety on your agenda.

And as already mentioned, check and rule out other possible leak areas before proceeding.

It depends on how quick you are at setting up the balance again on the carbs?
I have done it from underneath with the starter removed and from the top.
Your leak if its on the fuel pump is probably from the outer paper gasket to the fuel pump, it only has about 5mm to bare on
I've used some RTV in this location

Another point to note if you are refitting the old pump is that the mounting face of the pump is often distorted due to overtightening, the metal is quite soft on the original glass bowled pump(some sort of alloy?).....not sure about the aftermarket pumps though, I have had to true the face's up with a file a few times.
