As part of my +2 rebuild I managed to source a bare fibreglass under-dash trim from the Malvern show (the big curvy sheet) for the passenger side (RHD). There were two, but not being greedy I only got one of them. I was missing the drivers's side one until Neil sourced a reasonable one. Even this is suffering from the usual poxy, vacuum formed, white plastic rot that I am worried about it's long term robustness in a working car. Does anyone know a source of fibreglass copies? I asked at Matty's a while back and they didn't have any.

My new one is good enough as a pattern for a mould and the other side would also be good as a pattern so I was wondering if commissioning a series of 20 or 30 under dash trims would be worthwhile.

Any interest out there?

Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,

I would be very interested in a pair if they would work or be modified for lhd. Not sure if you can come up with both options or not. If so count me in for a set.

Regards
Mark

looking at the RHD driver's side, it looks like the only difference is that a slot is cut in the moulding to allow the steering column through. If anyone knows for sure I would be grateful if they could pass on the info.

I am slowly replacing all the ineterior panels originally made out of vac formed plastic with ones formed out of 22 gauge alloy, I have so far done the centre console, part of drivers side under dash and some of the trims which go along the lower edge of the dash, the under dash trims are easy to make just form it over your knee until you have the correct form and then trim to the correct shape, cover with thin sponge and then vinyl.

Kevin,
Do you (or anyone else) have an outline of the shape required to form a pattern or have you used a trial and error method to make your own shape?

I have been using thick paper to make patterns about an inch oversize all round, I then form the shape and finaly trim it to the shape of the original.

What happened to all these underdash trims???

I don't know whether everyone is the same but whenever I take my car to a garage, some time after I've got it back (too late to ring up and ask where it is - 'sorry mate it was never there') I find there is something else missing off the car.
Garages must have a mountain of bits that have never been put back on customers cars!

Because of this I'd been looking for an under dash trim for the drivers side for over four years and just recently bought one from a guy up North who was clearing out his garage - about £45 but it was in the correct oatmeal so I thought go for it. Cuts out some of the noise and also the draught in cold weather. Yes it does have a partial slot cut through it for the steering column and this is the weak point where careless mechs snap it through.
Cheers

I think I got parts from Paul Matty, or maybe Miles Wilkens. The original was there, but badly warped. Probably from the sunshine when it sat in Tampa, Florida for 15 years.

Hi,

I made my own by making cardboard formers held in the correct shape by thick wire taped to the back with duck tape. These were then covered with glass fibre. and trimmed with foam and leather cloth as per the originals. The result was very impressive. One bit to remember is the bulge around the heater vents. (the wire was from coat hangers!)

I will ask about using the moulds from the trims for a short run, without the cut-out for the steering wheel. As far as I can see, the trims are basically the same for LHD/RHD, with a slot cut in the appropriate side before being trimmed up. If I get any made up, they would have no slot.

Some great innovation shown by others in this thread to solving the lack of spares!

Here is a picture of the covered trim in place.

Shakedown drive this weekend!

Jeremy,

That one looks good and trimming after the fact would be fine. Keep us posted.

Thanks
Mark
