Yes, it was. A mate of mine bought a new, crated engine at a Govt auction for ?40 in the late 70s. All ancillaries, plug and play!

My friend Clark Lance sent me some photos yesterday that he wanted me to share with you all. Clark and I grew up about 3 miles apart north of Detroit, Michigan. We also lived about 35 miles apart in the early 90's in Massachusetts. I didn't meet Clark until the beginning of this century at Lime Rock. I believe I met his father Harold first at Dave Belden's pits the first year (2003) he got the Mk IX back together and running. Anyway Clark and I seem to get along and share a passion of all things that are Early Lotus. Clark also likes to share a story or a photo or two. Harold Lance (Clark's Father) was involved with one of the sports car clubs in the Detroit area and owned a Lotus Seven so Clark and his Brother Jeff knew what a Lotus was at an early age. Clark said that Jeff had a couple of friends that owned new Elan's, so back in 1965 so when Harold and Clark went up to the Players 200 at Mosport in June of 1965 Clark was very interested in the Elan's there that day and knew that these were something special. He snapped these photos of 26-S2-18 raced by Max Nerriere back then. For more info on this Elan please go back to page 11 and look at the photos of it that Greg posted of it at the Barber museum and the following posts by Davidb.

Well this is getting long and I am sure I am boring you all but if I have to listen to Pete and Tim go on about Austin Champs then you are more than welcome to read my spew or skip it and just go and look at the photos.

Not me, Thank Harold and Clark. Clark was just a young lad when he snapped these pictures. Not old enough to drive. Without his dad Clark would have been at home riding his bicycle or something...

THE Narriere car number 42 is on page 11 at turn 5B following the Alpha [Al peace] and the Porsche (Kroll) -I believe Narrierre lived around Burlington -thanks GARY There appears to be something blue with a black top in the upper right of the photo between a Ford Galaxy and a trailer this side of the blue pick up -edNope it's a formula car in blue

I guess Clark read my post and went and re-read page 11 of this post and sent along a couple more photos of 26-S2-18 when it was red just as it was when davidB owned it. One is with the hardtop and one is without. I wonder if it's David driving in these photos?

Clark also sent this photo that he took at Mosport in June of 1965 of the Blue and Black top 26r, it's the Cambridge Motors Car out of Alberta, Canada. A long tow to Mosport for sure.

Le Mans 24 Hours, 2003; Ian and I went to a supermarket near Mulsanne and this was in the foyer! No price though.
It claimed some Le Mans history, though I can't remember the details.

Cambridge motors was in 4237 St Catharines St Westmount Quebec sold Austin Triumph and Rovers run by PeterKieth and George Breck LA beret ---ED Pete I assume the trunk lid angle was some sort of an attempt at a rear spoiler for rear down force but I have no idea what the side scoops did or where the cooling went as there is nothing in the trunk but the pumps so the scoops may have just been to look good. or create a ground effects through the trunk and out the liD?? there is no evidence of brake ducting in the trunk . IDEAS of what looks good and what does not vary much in 50 years -ed

I have copies of the original Lotus Components specifications for the 'Racing Version Lotus Elan' and 'Racing Version Lotus Elan S.2'. The first, presumably for what is now known as the Series 1 or S1 is dated January 1964, but that for the S2 is not dated. Attached to the S2 specification is a copy of the FIA/ RAC 'Amendment to Form of Recognition' adding alternative magnesium wheels 6" rim width with a photograph of the solid wheels with no cut outs. This is dated 16th November 1964.

Does anyone know dates for when the 26R S2 and the wheels with cut outs were introduced? Can we assume that both were November 1964?

I would like to help Pete out here.

The Rochas drivers were John 'Pancho' Webb, who worked for Len Street (Lotus dealer) in Chelsea, and Ken Eady.

At the risk of causing controversy, I beleive that John's was genuine S1 26R of '64 vintage whereas Kens was a replica built up for the Monsieur Rochas sponsored '76 sports car series. AFN took over the championship in '77 so I don't think they raced after that. As far as I know Ken went on to race in F3.

Att'd is the factory spec for the "RACING VERSION LOTUS ELAN"

This document is dated January 1964 and the first 26R left the factory on 25/2/64 so I think it is safe to assume this is the original 26R spec. (in my opinion!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

I think it is virtually impossible to state when the wheels changed from solid to those with cutouts. The most likely change date was when the batch of solid wheels ran out!!

Many normal road cars have been modified to a similar spec as posted but this does not make them 26R's (again in my opinion)

There is an interesting article on GGLC called "What's in a 26R'" some errors re alloy wishbones but mostly correct and well worth a look.
