Anyone got a Twin Cam head knocking about!

PostPost by: Bozzie » Wed Sep 12, 2018 7:03 pm

Evening all!
Bad news from my garage this afternoon and I am in dire need of a serviceable head for my beloved ‘67 Plus 2.
Hope someone out there can help out and part me from some of my ‘hard earned’ for a decent one.
Here’s hoping!!
Thanks everyone

First question. What is wrong with the head you have that the 'garage' says is no good?

If your garage is used to working on more modern engines and dont have much twin cam experience it may be that all is not lost.

Hi Ian
I use a guy in Accrington, Phoenix Motorsport, he’s respected and very knowledgeable on everything Lotus and Lotus Motorsport and certainly not one to condem anything with life left in it! He’s actually more mortified than me, if that’s possible. The head was removed and sent off to be skimmed but they apparently said it was unserviceable due to a crack.

Hello Mark,
they said something similar to mine, "unusable" and "unrepairable".
Nonetheless, Brian Buckland had it repaired and now it looks and works if nothign had happened ..
I would show it to a TC head specialist.
1964 S1 (engine ready, awainting body repair)
1967 S3 DHC (now adjusted by Brian Buckland, totally calm idle)
1969 S4 FHC (finishing interior, changing wiring loom)

I appreciate those comments and I will certainly pass them on. Knowing this guy I don’t think it would get passed over it it wasn’t the case but it’s definitely worth checking.

I have not used them but Chase Engineering in Stoke have some pretty nifty techniques for putting metal where it wasn't (but where it should be). Probably not cheap but then heads aren't either.

Obviously it depends on what is wrong with your head but I seen castings where they have replaced massive chunks with some sort of metal spraying done without heat (it relies on the sprayed particles travelling so fast they fuse into the target).

I know they are not cheap because when I enquired about getting part of an underwater camera housing repaired, the first question was "how much is a replacement part"!

The economics of repairing a cracked head depends on the crack location and how much work is required to access it. This assumes the rest of the head is OK from a hardness and corrosion perspective so the reapir is worthwhile

If the crack is on an easily accessible place then its generally economic to repair. If the crack in under the cam tunnels and you need to cut out significant parts to access and then need to rebuild / replace the parts cut out and then re-bore the cam tunnels then it is usually not economic versus a good second hand head or a new one.

I have totally destroyed the hemispherical bowl in one cylinder following a valve dropping at high revs so that all was left was the water jacket space behind it and the remains of the plug thread and valve seats / ports and that was still economically repairable.

But you do need to find a skilled welder with the experience who is prepared to take on the task and many people will say its not possible.

cheers

Hi Kevin
Could you please post this as a new topic as I’m using this to try and source a usable head for my Elan+2. Just gets messy if we go off on tangents. Thanks Mark

New heads are available from QED and SAS Engineering; not cheap, as is to be expected, but will give you a benchmark for what constitutes 'economically repairable' and assist in making an informed decision. Alternatively see if buying a head or even a complete engine makes sense. I see there is head on e bay at present for spares or repair.

I assume you want a Weber head, but I have over the past few years accumulated an assortment of Stromberg heads - PM me if you are interested...

Hi Matt, The carbs are dellortos now but were webers so I don't think the Stromberg head will work! I will ask the question though. Thank you
