Black Car Seat Material

PostPost by: carrierdave » Mon Oct 15, 2018 1:38 pm

Hi there
Whilst my car is off the road I have decided to spruce up the vinyl seats and replace some of the trim. So the question is “has anyone found a good supplier for the black seat material”?
I’m not looking for the basket weave bit, just the outer seat material.
Many thanks

The Black Vinyl that Lotus used on later cars was called Ambla & unfortunately is unobtainable. Here is a photo to show the relatively coarse grain:

I've been on the lookout for close matches for a couple of years as I have federal seat covers made up. I had a close match, but even that source has dried up.

Interested to see if anyone else has a close match...

p.s. Black basket weave material is readily available....

I wonder if there are any discarded covers, where the basket weave is shot but the rest useful, out there ? I have a seat (+2) where the upper corner on one side is worn through to the frame.
Is it practical to inset a piece or replace that part to keep the patina ?
I would of course stand in line behind the OP+1

I have a cunning plan!
if I could get a material which is reasonably close, I could remove the rear panel on both seats and use that material to carry out my repairs on the front of the seats.

Putting the new material on the back of the seats hopefully won’t stand out that much.
