Lotus Elan

Elan S4 1969 door latch

PostPost by: Elanmans4 » Mon Jun 11, 2018 6:30 pm

Hello,

I have a UK 1969 Elan S4 and the passenger side door catch has broken.

I have now removed it and the latch/ catch has broken inside.

My question is does someone have one for sale or can someone recommend someone to repair it.

Many thanks Shaun

Depending on what you need you may get away with parts from a period mini lock which are readily available.
What has broken?
There's not a lot inside.
When mine wasn't working a generous dose of WD40 did the trick!

Hello, thank you for your reply, I will try to up load a picture, it’s a sealed unit but does have one rivet .

I have not drilled the rivet out the arms both move but the striker is locked closed, I tried to pull lever and release striker but it’s locked

And ideas are very welcome.

Thanks

Shaun

Are you saying that the internal locking plate cannot be released and turned manually by hand at all?
The plate runs between two surfaces and dirt build up can increase resistance significantly.
Oiling is a problembecause it attracts dust.
Mine was very stiff but flushing through with WD40 made a big difference.

Hello,

Yes you are correct it will not release even with a lot of pressure with the arms pulled.

It looks dry so covered in WD but it will just not move back to the unlock position.

I have just looked on eBay at the mini latch they look similar but are not the same but I may be use as spares if I could get it open

Will the door not open from the inside but using the button on the outside it will open.
If so there is a little tab to slide so you can open from inside the car (child proof system).

The lock is out of the car and inoperative.

Completely cover it in a bath penetrating fluid and leave for a couple of days. It’s probably a crap build up and you may need to soften it up.
Cheers
