Lotus Elan

Elan S2 interior locking toggle or stem needed

PostPost by: Certified Lotus » Thu Nov 08, 2018 11:28 am

I’m in the midst of completing the little details of restoring an Elan S2 I recently bought and am in need of the two interior locking “toggle” or “stem” that has black plastic on one end and threaded rod on the other. Does anyone have these or know a source for them?

Glen,
I too am interested in these parts ( joining the queue), although I'll probably be happy to fabricate something.
Do you have any pictures of one , ( I think I know the part) but , perhaps more crucially, having some door locks to play with I can't see where it goes and what it actuates.

Thank you. I note it's not a door lock, but a window lock!

I'm in the process of putting together my renovated parts. Here are pictures of mine as they came off the car, a 1966 S2. One of the flat springs that holds the window lock in the open or closed position was missing on my car. I've now got some spring steel to remake the spring and I think I now understand the heat treatment required, so my plan is to make a batch in case other need any. I'll make a post when I've done them.

Window unlocked:

Window locked. The pivoting part passes thought a slot in the window channel preventing the window from being pushed down.

Really useful photos shown. Thank you.

I spent hours of reading previous threads a months ago and believe that these window lock parts were fitted from (I think) subframe N° 4030 or so onwards, and decided that I might skip this task (I have subframe N°4022).

However, the parts would be functionally very useful so if anyone is planning to make the spring, handle and or lever, please count me in !

I’m always amazed at the level of information that members provide when you ask a question. Thank you!

I reached out to several suppliers of Lotus parts in the US regarding the toggle lock lever and amazingly Dave Bean has them in stock. There is only one issue.......they don’t have the black plastic “flipper end”. Never the less, they are $4.39 each so I bought a couple and will see if I can source the plastic end somewhere.

Anyone have a 3D printer that can crank these out?

Amused by your reply as most of the regular folks here are what Brits call car "anoraks" .

I understand it may be possible to retask little bits of plastic from other automobiles.

I'll look into the Bean connection.

3D printers normally produce plastic parts, those that can print metal parts are (I understand) very expensive only likely to be found in industrial circumstances.

What you need to make those handles is just a simple lathe, or you could probably manage with some stock rod, a vice, a thread die of the right size, a drill & some plastic to make the handle and a file and emery paper to make the plastic shape nice.

:D

Sorry, I meant the plastic handle to be made with a 3D printer. I have the threaded chrome rods from Dave Bean.

I was thinking that but I don’t think they are wide enough at the base to drill out and glue. I have some and will try once I get the threaded rods.

Others have made the plastic knob from other switches.

Thanks Brian. I've been trying to lift and post that picture from my Restoration thread for the last hour and couldn't get it to work. Amazing coincidence that I found that you just did it ! :D
