Lotus Elan

Elan 4 speed gearbox wanted

PostPost by: Concrete-crusher » Sat Apr 21, 2018 3:52 pm

Hi 3rd time lucky I hope

I bought a reconditioned gearbox on eBay , looked great , runs quietly but really notchy to change gear

Second option took my original gearbox to a specialist for a rebuild , only to be told the gears have signs of corrosion so not worth the rebuild.

3rd option does anyone here have a good 4 speed box either re conditioned or suitable for such ?

Btw it’s the semi close ratio box I have been using in both cases above.

pS I’m located in Hampshire but frequently travel to other parts of the UK

Thanks Steve

Hi Steve, loads of questions I'm afraid.
Have you pinned down the notchiness on the ebay box?
Why did you take original to gearbox man?
Can't you make one good one out of the two?
You've rebuilt the engine yourself so a gearbox should be within your ability.

Hi Mark

My original box had a whine in second and third , I'm surprised at the corrosion finding as other than the slight noise it worked perfectly , the gearbox specialist suggested making one from the 2 but that would mean both boxes out and car off the road.

I'm going to use my original box to get to know how they work if that makes sense , in the mean time if another box comes up I'll have it and swap them over.

I will give pro motor a call , I see he has a 2000e box for sale at the moment , but it's not the elan box.

Anyway other than that , and my alternator packing up this week after only 500 miles the cars going great.

Steve

Mark's advice is good. It should be possible to find the gears with some patient hunting about.

I may even be able to help on that front fairly soon myself as Kelvedon are going to be building a new race gearbox for my S1.5 and the old gearset could possibly be re-cycled but so far it has not been stripped.

I also know a very pleasant fellow based near Birmingham (GB) who has (at the last count) 8 S/H (possibly needing rebuilding) Elan gearboxes available for I think, just under £400 each: he was presenting them at Race Retro.

I can send you his details if you would like to follow this up.

If you do get a third you could probably recover your costs by cannibalizing the other two to make a good one and selling it on.
Either that or put up with the second until winter - or are you an all year round user?

Thanks Mark and Andrew , I'm not in a hurry as the installed box is usable
