Lotus Elan

Elan S4 SE dhc like they used to be

PostPost by: BobS2 » Sat Jul 21, 2018 7:15 am

I have just spotted this Elan on eBay in what I can only describe as 'old school' condition, not an over restored trailer princess. Obviously well used and yet cherished by its current owner for 36 years.

I can remember when my Elan was in this rough and ready condition - happy days!
Not that I don't admire those mirror-like paint jobs on freshly restored old cars - I just don't have the time or money to go that far. I would rather be using it.

Woof. Paint is rougher even than my S4, which I thought was pretty rough!

Does look like a nice car, though. I'd rather have a good chassis and a sorted car than a pristine paint job with major mechanical issues underneath.

I have a very similar car that's now been tucked away for just over 30 years! The paintwork is actually quite good though, only really let down with tatty bumpers and wheels.

The car had never lived outside Yourshire until I bought it from the 2nd owner. It's super-original with some period mods, and even the hood is from 1970. That acted as a mouse nest many years ago, so I think I'll have to change that!

I keep getting distracted with new projects...but it's time to be renovated (not restored) is coming.

I think yours is quite a bit better from memory Mark. Also, if you are buying a car on its originality, a Spyder chassis isn't going to help. Duck and cover...
