Elans & +2s Owned by the Famous

PostPost by: trw99 » Sun Nov 30, 2008 12:13 pm

As a bit of fun during the December period.

Which famous or well known people have owned or still own an Elan or +2?

Off the top of my head I can think of the following:

Jim Clark - S1, S2 and S3 Coupe
Britt Eckland - S2? Bought by Peter Sellars for her; did he own one too?
Ron Hickman - Sprint DHC
Jimi Hendrix - S3? Did he own that one in the well known photo or had he borrowed it?

Others, dear listers?

Brit Ekland's Elan was a +2. The current owner lives in Yorkshire who exhibited the car on my stand at Donington a few years ago.

It was either Britt or Peter Sellers that had an S2, but it was a Shapecraft conversion of, I believe, a standard Elan, rather than a 26R.

Graham Hill had the twin of Jim Clark's S3 Coupe, also in yellow.

Jim

Too many? - but that's just the point of this thread! I was wondering who they all are and thought we could have a bit of fun thinking of them.

For example, being an ignorant chap, I do not know who Jim Jackson is or what type of Elan he had.

Gordon Murray has a S3, I think and Jay Leno has two S1s, doesn't he?

Peter Egan has an S3, Emma Peel, drove but did not owned a S3?

Who was it who was in a band/group owned and was driving an Elan, where a passenger was killed and written into in a Beatles song?

Can not reall the name of the song?

While at LOG 27, Emerson Fittapaldi told me that when he drove for Lotus, Colin gave him a +2 however he no longer owns it. I wonder who does?

The song was 'A Day in the Life' and the it was Tara Browne, heir to the Guiness estate and friend of the Beatles who crashed and died in his Elan after running a red light in Kensington

When I was selling my house a few years ago, the estate agent that came to do the valuation said that his boss owned an Elan that belonged to Peter Sellers but he did not know anymore about which model or colour.
I also seem to remember seeing a few years back in The Sunday Times magazine, an article about Sellers with a very nice picture of him with his head poking out from the zipped up tonneau cover of a white series 3 DHC (cannot remember exactly, could have been S2 or S4).

Courtesy The Nostalgia Forum I looked him up. Seems he managed Tyrell, Honda and Minardi at various times.

Jabby Crombac inherited oned of Jim Clarks Elans after he died and I believe still owned it until just before he died.

Tim Densham, Renault F1's cheief designer owns a +2. He was also an engineer at Lotus during the 80's.
