The Questions people ask....

PostPost by: elanner » Mon Aug 28, 2017 12:58 am

So it was a lovely day in Boston today and I took the Elan over to some friends for dinner. On the drive through my local suburbs I was followed by a Nissan Pathfinder. After stopping at a Stop sign the driver, a guy in his late 40s (I would guess) pulls up beside me, sticks his head out of the window and says:

Him: "Excuse me, is that a Weber head or a Stromberg head?"
Me: "Weber"
Him: "67?"
Me: "69"
Him: "Very cool"
And then drives away.....

There can't be many people around here who would know to ask. More commonly I get "Is that an MG?"

Ok.

I like it. Random guy knowing about Weber vs Stromberg head. Pretty neat.

But, it begs the question how do you have a Weber head on a 69 in the good old US of A?

Imported later? Retrofit?

Only Strombergs were available in 69 in the US.

Many US owners swapped out their Stromberg heads and bought a Weber head and carbs. There was/is a firm who converted Stromberg heads to accept Webers too.

Of course.

I am also one who now has a Weber head instead of my original Stromberg one.

John McCoy at Omnitech does the head conversions from Stromberg to Webers, and they perform quite well as I understand it.

I was just curious how "elanner" arrived at having a Weber head in his 69.

It took me 47 years to get there.

The serial/VIN number is 45/9730. The car was originally sold in Canada, which apparently received Weber-headed cars. It has no Federal features (fail safe headlamps, etc.) I brought it into the US from Nova Scotia six years ago.

The engine number is D/21303. I gather that, according to Miles Wilkins, D prefix engines used Webers. So I assume it's original.

I wonder what people will think my Plus 2 is.

The question I always got about my Esprit was, "Is that a Dee-Lorian?"

I've been asked if my +2 is an Opal GT, but most recently by my painter if it's a kit car. But I do live where Jeeps and pickup trucks rule the roads.
