Video Cam Microphone.

As I've been putting some miles on my +2 I've been attempting to video certain bits.
The vids turn out ok(ish) but the sound is virtually all "white noise".
Interestingly this is much less when the camera is hand held, but rigging it up on a tripod lashed to the seat, swamps the exhaust and engine sound.
My camera does have a separate microphone input , I'm assuming plugging this is disconnects the inbuilt mic.
I wonder if some of the better vids are recorded without sound and that added later?
Anyone have any experience of this. Or know of a decent quality mic. I can try?

I did that on my 340R. As you said, it recorded only wind noise.
I then used a quite unremarkable cheapish noname headset that had a microphone with foam around.
And I put it on the floor or below the windshield. This way it recorded recorded engine noise as I heard it myself.
However I did not check which way it was better ... in any case much better than the built-in micro of the camera.

Get a small wired mike and put it under the drivers seat. Yes, that is correct......under the drivers seat. I?ve made dozens of car videos and placed microphones all over the car in ever location you can imagine. Used countless different types of mike?s (including some very expensive shot gun mikes).
Here is an example of a video driving my Elan S1 with the mike under the drivers seat.

No issues, can locate under either seat. Just make sure the Mike doesn?t move around (I Velcro in place).

That's certainly worth a try. Thanks. Although, being +2, it is not wind noise as such, just amplified back ground. Like the harsh road noise when passing over certain road surfaces. To me its reasonable quiet, to the mic it swamps the exhaust.
Although, as I stated, hand held it is much less. The camera has all sort of "smarty" settings most of which seem ??? It gives screen messages worthy of microsoft - "this setting cannot be used in this configuration"

Is it a DSLR camera ? if the lens has a setting for image stabilisation, then this should be turned off when using a tripod (or solid mount ?).. this is because it creates a feed back loop... I'm wondering if this would affect the on-board mike.
If a "goPro" type then I'd doubt the same applies as they are usually mounted.

A panasonic HC-900 Camcorder.

Interesting about turning off stabilisation with a tripod, as I believe it mentions this in the blurb somewhere.
It makes me wonder if it was off for the hand held and that is why the noise was not such a problem?
Thanks for that!
Problem is the tripod is not very steady in the car being simply strapped to the front seat. It wobbles a bit!
It also has settings for zoom mic / surround mic. and others that I'm not to sure of either.
