Fuel filler cap orientation

Finally got my fuel tank back in the car after many years and fitted the new filler cap, but then wasn't sure which way round it should be, should the cap hinge be towards the front of the car or the rear. Just a small detail, but best to have it right!

Mine have been hinged at the front.

another small detail - apologies if you already have this covered...
there's a small bracket (screwed to the wheel arch side). The filler neck is fastened to it with a largish circumference, narrow band, jubilee clip. this is all inside the boot. I guess it stops any movement of the neck.

A second attempt... Find it isn't easy to post pictures from phone on here...
The lower part is tucked behind carpet (glued). I estimated the length of that part. You should find a couple of holes near the top of the wheel arch. There are 2 self tappers on mine.

Thanks for that Adrian, I think I can make one of those no problem, will need to have a look behind the sound deadening tomorrow. Just been out today to collect my new cv joint drive shafts from Kelvedon Motors plus a few other odds and ends.

Don't forget to fit a MX5 non return inside the rubber filler tube to stop fuel pouring out on corners when the fuel tank is full

FILLER MOD +2 ELAN
I just thought some of you might be interested in an experiment I have just tried as I got a bit fed up with fuel spilling out if I filled my +2 more than half full.
I have fitted a one way valve that is normally fitted into the filler neck of an MX5

As the OD of this is smaller than the hose on the +2 and I needed a way of fixing it into the +2 hose anyway I purchased a second hand filler neck from an MX5 (the valve clips into this) and cut off the bit at the end where the valve clips in.
With the use of two ID reducers I fitted the assembly into the +2 hose at the tank end and clamped it in position with a couple of jubilee clips.

Anyway it seems to work- I have just spent a week touring Northumberland (many steep hills and sharp bends) and I initially filled the car to 3/4 full ( far more than would have been a problem before) and later filled all the way with no sloshing over the wing.
Its worth noting that the MX5 filler neck that I purchased already had the correct valve fitted (you need to have the later version of the valve)

Checked my car this morning, no screw holes where the bracket should be so I'm guessing this is a mod that was incorporated later in production, my car was first registered in November 1967 so is a very early one with the transverse silencer. No problem to make and fit one though, especially with all the good info and pictures provided above.
