Plus 2 fuel smells

PostPost by: JonB » Thu Jan 25, 2018 1:51 pm

Hi

I'm well aware of the reason why my Plus 2 always smells of petrol and I want to fix it. There's plenty of info on this, including the Club Lotus piece on modifying the breather pipes. I had a look at mine today and they are rock solid - stiff as anything - and probably not making a good seal with the breather outputs on the tank.

So, I want to implement the Club Lotus mod (as well as put the MX5 filler valve in). However, I first need to find a source of the modified filler neck, as I have nothing here (taps, braising skills) to modify it myself. Anyone got any ideas for a UK supplier of ready modded filler necks?

What I did was find a piece of pipe that slid nicely inside the original one from the filler cap then after cleaning and degreasing I glued the smaller pipe inside with epoxy fuel tank sealer knowing that the fuel will not attack it!
The two layers then give enough thickness to drill and tap the neck for a screw in vent nipple. I used a taper threaded nipple again sealed with tank sealer!

I had a local radiator-shop braze in a threaded bung. Easy and cost hardly anything.

As for the hardened hose, I replaced all mine with Tygon, which is compatible with petrol, should stay pliable forever, and weighs a lot less than the hardened old PVC.

I think Spyder used to do the filler neck mods, wether it was mod yours for you or an outright sale I'm not sure. Maybe they still do..?

I?m in the process of doing a similar mod to mine and have bought a brass reducer , 3/4 bsp to 3/8 bsp and am about to file the hexagonal end to match the radius of the filler neck then take it to one of the local engineering places to get them to braze it in. I have marked where it should go before removing the filler neck, and plan to drill the hole myself. I then plan to take the filler cap off the neck before getting the brazing done, as it?s a new one and I don?t want it damaged. I?ve also fitted the fancy one way vent valves mentioned in one of the previous threads on tank vents, they seem good if expensive. They let air free flow back onto the tank but act as a pressure relief valve and only open to let pressure out if it exceeds a set pressure. I can send photos of how I have done it if you are interested.

Photos of my breather arrangement, it?s complete on the drivers side, still need to fit the breather valve and vent pipe on the left side, plus put the tapping in the fuel filler neck. Picture of valve and brass bush prior to machining that will be brazed into the filler neck.

A couple more pictures, I?ll add some more when I?ve completed the left side and tie in to the filler neck.
