Are u sure ? I first thought that....
The end of the cable doesn't fix to the carbs, it fixes to the bracket below. (see picture earlier )
The cable outer slots into brass sleeve in carb actuating armature

Yeah, Rich is right. It's not the cable that's attached to the throttle linkage, as you might expect. The cable end attaches to a bracket. The cable sheath goes through the linkage. When the cable is pulled through the linkage, the end of the cable can't move so the sheath moves toward the cable end, thus pulling down the linkage.

This is how you make it work with the cable coming in from above.

Ohh . . . my kingdom for a little video clip right now . . . sorry i do not have

Hi, unfortunately because of the way that 40DCOE's work (ie a downward motion of the throttle lever), I don't think there is any standard Lotus way of operating them from the top with a pull motion from the cable.

You would have to change the throttle levers and fabricate a bracket somewhere to pull the throttle lever up from behind the centre-line of the throttle spindles. It may be a bit of a bodge.
Alternatively, you would have to go aftermarket with something like the ones shown in these links :-

There are lots of solutions to your problem, some more elegant than others

Hope that helps,
Steve

Richard, you're right, just checked your pic. Also looked at some engine bay of my old cars.
Ignore me brain fade again.
Just shows how the mind plays tricks when you're over a certain age, and you haven't owned an Elan for a few years..............

Getting back to the original subject, I wonder if this may be of interest to someone?
