Alternate Source for Window Cable Spool?

PostPost by: Stevie-Heathie » Sat Oct 21, 2017 1:02 pm

I?m taking advantage of Storm Brian by sorting out my S3 driver?s door window. Successfully did the passenger door a few months ago.

This time I need a new cable spool. I?m shocked at how much the usual suspects are charging for a small simple piece of plastic (?48!).

I?m all for supporting these companies because I rely on them to keep my elan on the road but there?s a limit. Does anybody happen to know if these parts are used in any other vehicle or other applications?

TIA
Steve

Steve,

I think you are out of luck, I believe these are Lotus only components. Like you I was not happy, but my concern was mainly about quality. I made my own, and it certainly cost more than ?48 of my time.

If that was a high volume, injected, nylon piece, ?48 would indeed be highway robbery. If the one in the picture is original, it looks like even the Lotus part was machined out of a lump. With the labor involved to machine one, ?48 seems pretty reasonable. Machine shop labor here in the middle of nowhere is $90/hour (?68.25).
