Help! Stuck choke cable housing

PostPost by: SantaBarbaraS4 » Mon Jun 05, 2017 5:07 pm

I've completed tearing down my dash with the exception of the choke cable. I was able to pull the heater cable through its sheath in order to remove the cup and housing from the dash, but I cannot move the action on the choke cable more than 2 inches in or out. Can anyone help?

If you pull the plastic knob out as far as you can, you will see there is a washer with two slots in it, use a couple of screwdrivers to rotate the washer lefty loosy and it will allow you to pull through the cup. Dan

Thanks! I've managed to loosen the housing, slotted washer and cup, but everything's still strung together by the cable! Any other advice??

I've encountered this a few times on restoration jobs. Spray some easing oil or silicone lubricant on the exposed inner part at the dash end then push the cable back in again as far as it will go. Check the carb end of the inner for burrs or kinks that might catch on the outer as you pull it through, trim the end if there are and try pulling it out again. If it moves a bit then stops or catches then that is the most likely cause. Another thing you can do is soak the outer in easing oil and bend the whole cable forwards and backwards in a gentle curve to allow the coils of the outer to separate slightly and let the lubricant in. If the inner moves at all then you will get it out eventually!
