Hi am in the process of repainting my Elan +2 and took the screen out. Now time to replace and want to replace the trim that was already distorted. Appreciate that from usual suppliers can obtain a trim but they do not consider it best solution. Read that Ford Classic windscreen is the default screen but wonder whether a better trim can be sourced and from where.
Any feed back appreciated

Hi Robert. I'm in the same position as you with windscreen out and Elan +2 is in the paint shop at present for full re-spray. My +2 has a bonded windscreen and I bought the trim from usual suppliers a year or so ago and whilst I think it will look ok as long as I can curve it round the top corners without creasing it I'm not entirely happy with the corner pieces which are a different profile to the actual trim but nobody seems to supply any other corner pieces that are the same profile. What I was really going to say was whilst I haven't got an answer for you in terms of any alternatives, if you do find any other solution for the trim for a bonded screen then I'd be interested to know.

Hi
From my research and from forum members here, with a bit of research found that Mick Miller and SJ Sportscars obtain their trim pieces from same supplier as Paul Matty. So !!! have purchased the trim from Paul Matty and right now is with the windscreen specialist that have used in the past and has fitted many screens to classic cars.
Will report back on success or failure when screen back in car.Likewise replacing rubber and trim on rear screen so same applies !
regards
Robert

Hi
We now have the screen back in. We purchased the chrome trim from Paul Matty. It was a very tedious job and have to admit not 100% successful. We very very carefully heated and bent the trim around the screen but even being super cautious still the chrome in the trim crinkled around the tightest part of the corner, the plastic streches and compresses but the chrome does not so unless some one has another approach crinkling the chrome is enevitable. Once chrome trim in place allowed 24 hours for bonding to set. trim taped and strapped around screen.
Then we lifted screen into screen aperture bonded strapped screen in situ and left for 24 hours. Job done, Thankfully !!!

Hi swiftcruiser
How about a photo of the result
I fitted my screen many years ago with rubber inset bonded in the aperture, then fitted the glass with chrome filler strip(Mini). This was because the available trim in those days was rubbish and not even chrome more like grey, I always fancied replacing this if the present trim is any good if not I will leave as is
Not original but has been installed without problems for over twenty years.

Hi Robert,
I'm trial fitting the same trim from Paul Matty to my windscreen at present and also finding the job very tedious! As you say it's very difficult no matter how careful you are to successfully bend the trim round the top corners without crinkling the chrome strip inside. This is proving one of the most frustrating jobs of the whole restoration!
How did you find the bottom corner pieces? Apart from the profile being different the corner pieces I have (also from Paul Matty) don't seem wide enough. I'm finding it almost impossible to slide the chrome trim into the corner pieces without damaging it.
The plastic chrome trim is expensive and I'm finding it a not very successful alternative to the original chrome trim. I'm now thinking of going down a different route and bonding the screen in with a rubber surround and a thin chrome filler strip in the middle as on the earlier non bonded screens. Not the end result I wanted but might be what I end up having to do.

I reused the chrome bottom corner pieces they sort of fitted. Ideal if someone who has fitted an earlier type screen surround with the chrome infill strip, dare I say like a Mini could give us some input. Our car is finished and from 10 ft away looks perfect just frustrating that have had to accept crinkled chrome corners.
Has anyone managed the perfect fit. On the Salvage hunters restoration last year of the Elan I think they went the same route as you are now planning,
Robert

Mine was done a few years ago with the plastic trim. There is crinkling but it is small and I don't really notice it. The corner trim covers appear to have been bent slightly to better fit the profile of the trim and they are kind of loose - but they won't come off. It's not all sweetness & light, though - there is a slight leak.
