Metalflake question

My plus 2 is soon off to the paint shop. I'm fairly set on the idea of a silver metalflake roof ( but still open to suggestion).
In an attempt to recreate an original look, is there a specific size of flakes that I should be specifying? From what I can see they are available in 100, 200 and 400 micron sizes.
I'd welcome any input anyone may have, good bad or whatever, not just on the flake size bug on the whole metalflake thing.
Many thanks
Simon

If there is one piece of advice i can give don't buy cheap stuff!! I only use House of Kolor effect paint because the glitter tends to go off the cheaper stuff. http://www.house-of-kolor.co.uk/
Personally i've never done a +2 Roof but from my experience with Glitter and the ones i've seen at shows i'd go big myself the 100 and 200 is usually added to clear for an effect over a base (can still spray them through a gun) where as the 400 is used to cover a base (need a Glitter gun to put it on well)
If i was you i'd want to see some spray outs, most decent custom paint suppliers will have some form of demo you can look at.

Hi Simon
the plus2 workshop manual section B page 61 states spray polyester gel coat to match base colour followed by
mixing 5oz flakes to 2 imp.pints of clear acrylic mixed with thinner, followed by more light dust coats of acrylic clear.
Someone here will probably have details of flake sizes,i will be interested to know how you get on as my car had a silver flake roof originally,
regards

That tends to imply the Flake is Medium or standard because the bigger flake needs to be put on with a Flake buster gun https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkaOq6SLw8g you have to watch out for over-applying the clear if you want a heavy Glitter effect with the Flake in the lacquer / a big fluid tip in the gun where as a Buster Gun (often called Dry Flaking) you apply a grip and full coat of clear with slow activator in then give it some Flake over the top (The Flake will only stay where the Clear is wet) then finish with two coats of quality Lacquer over the lot.

Hi Simon
The original flake was a Metalflake product and as far as I know the company still exists. See
http://www.metalflake.co.uk/products_li ... 20PRODUCTS
or
https://www.metalflakecorp.com/
The original product code was "M011018 Micro #1 Silver" and, if you are keen to reproduce the original colour, this should be applied over a white rather than silver base coat

Forgive the follow-up dumb question, but is 8oz of flake sufficient to coat a Plus 2 roof?

One further question / request:-
I have searched the web but haven't been able to find any good pictures.
Would anyone be able to post a couple of close-up pictures of the front and rear door pillars of a +2 that shows how the metalflake roof paint should abut the main body colour.
Any assistance would be gratefully received.
