Nose Badge Holes

PostPost by: William2 » Thu Nov 21, 2013 5:50 pm

Having just had my car resprayed I am about to fit the Lotus nose badge. The badge I bought from the Lotus parts fair last year is slightly concave underneath and the 2 threaded studs are mounted at a slight angle. This means I will have to carefully make the holes in the bodywork slotted in shape to fit the badge I presume. Does this ring any bells with anyone and are all the nose badges manufactured like this?

In 37 years of Lotus ownership - daily driver and parts cars - I've never seen a nose badge with angled pins. The correct Wellnuts can be difficult to find, but not impossible. I bought a box of 25 locally a few years ago. HTH.

I have two brand new badges (bought about 25 years ago from a Lotus Dealer) and still in their Lotus packets, the pins on both are slightly angled (not much) but definatly angled which I have tried to show in the pics.
Yes they are concave on the back side.

Hi Everyone

I've noticed badges like this too, however, I found the holes on the bodywork had sufficient clearance to allow them to be fitted ok.

If you can't get the correct size Wellnuts, try using grommets between the inside of the bodywork and the fixing nuts. Thats what I had to do.

Andy,
Don't bodge your badge holes!
Have you trial fitted it?
As pointed out the studs will be slightly angled, quite normal. If you need to make alterations then you have bought a very poor copy and it's best to buy another from someone reputable like Sue Miller.

other than that there is a super self adhesive badge available on Ebay which I'm sure you will love.

A well thought out, helpful and succinct reply to your message from Spyder Fan.

However, for the sake of originality you should note that the font on that badge is not correct for our Elans and I suspect that the colours used are off too ...

Well this needs a bit of science adding in.
Depending on the age of the badge the threaded studs will vary.
Later ones have metric threads which have an included flank angle of 60?
But earlier ones may have BA with an included flank angle of 47? 30'
On the other hand they may be Unified with a 60? flank angle.
Or even BSF which has 55?

That should sort it all out :)

I read somewhere that genuine 26/Rs had an Acme thread with the centre of the stud drilled out for lightness, Shapecraft had British Cycle Fine, BRM and IWR used either Panzergewinde or RMS (although, personally I doubt this last one, for obvious reasons).

Carroll Smiths book "Nuts, Bolts, Fasteners and Plumbing Handbook" is my Bible.

Why do you insist on ridiculing a post? a poster asked a question and it was answered yet you try to turn the post into a joke.
All questions deserve a informative answer and by adding comments that are neither constructive or helpful does nothing to encourage new members to post a question least they be made to look foolish.
The questions may be beneath your vast technical knowledge being that you were the "wonder boy" at BMW as you are fond of telling us but someone who posts a question is asking for help be it a small or (silly) question in your opinion but they are looking for an answer to something they do not know or they want clarification on.
Considering the majority of your posts are in the inane joke section (a section I dont think the forum needs) I would suggest you carry on building up your post count there instead of the technical section.

As the originator of this post I entirely agree with the previous thread. We Elan owners should all help one another with advice and it isn't very helpful or constructive to "clog up" the forum with meaningless threads. As it happens it appears that my question relating to angled/straight threaded studs has actually shown that the badge quality varies on this issue.
