Sunvisor help

PostPost by: jerryh » Mon Sep 10, 2012 1:25 pm

Hi
Can anyone help me with a photo and dimensions of a Sunvisor for an S3 FHC, I can't seem to source a suitable visor so I am going to make the frame and get my trimmer to cover them but I need an idea of shape and size so if anyone can help I would much appreciate it.

Cheers

I am not sure if the S3 & S4 are the same but here are some pictures I took of my Sprint a while ago. My S3 is not accessible at the moment to get a closer look.

Brian

Many thanks for the photos and dimensions that's just what I wanted, my cars at the trimmers at the moment and I told him to fix the headlining over the holes as I would get some visors later on, he suggested making them as they are only basic, just the mounting will need a bit of work out of some aluminium block.

Cheers

Jerry--

I would be interested to hear how your sunvisor project goes. My S4 sunvisors got "lost" along the way and I would like to replace them. I don't remember how they mount to the windscreen. If you have any tips on making the frame, etc., I would appreciate it.

Incidentally, I inquired about replacements from a shop in the UK last year and the response was that I had made the "weirdest" parts request the shop had ever received!

I'll post some pics of the frame when done, regarding the brackets if it's for a drophead Sue Miller keeps them, I'm not sure how they fix to the windscreen I'm sure someone on here can help.

Thanks and good luck. I don't know who Sue Miller is -- is that a person or a business?

Greg--

I sent her an email to see if she has them. Was it difficult to install the brackets?

Not difficult but they are under the full width strip of alloy that fixes the top. A couple of rivets for the bracket but many for the alloy strip. It can really get involved because there is the header material and padding that you have to deal with. I removed mine so I could use washers under the rivets for the alloy strip and sun visor brackets. I made new padding from pipe insulation.

Thanks for the photos. I'll have to take a look at the car when I get home.

Greg-

I can't orient your photos. Do you have a picture of the visors or brackets as mounted from the driver's see pespective? The brackets hang below the windscreen frame, correct? I can't remember how mine worked but it would be impossible I think to fix the top if the brackets mount on top of the steel strip.

Jerry, the S3 fhc sunvisors are the same shape and have the same fixings as the early Elan Plus 2 cars. Unfortunately the Plus 2 visors are trimmed in Loadstar headlining material, where the S3 is Confetti, so they won't go straight on.

I mention this as many Plus 2 cars have been scrapped in recent years, and you are more likely to find a pair from those cars.

I have a spare pair of fixings if you want them.

Hillman Imp sunvisors are almost the same as S3 fhc originals. Pre-73 Imps used a plain textured off-white vinyl, post-73 a perforated vinyl. They screw straight into the holes already present in the fhc's body moulding. Or you could use their frames and brackets with your choice of outer covering. Ford Dove Grey is a good colour match for the metalwork.

Try Imp specialist Malcolm Anderson on 01823 350360.

Lesesq, I'm looking down from the top, almost directly above the windscreen pillar. You're correct, they hang below the windscreen frame. No, they cannot mount above the alloy strip. I'll try to get a pic later today.

Mark and John

Many thanks for your replies, I now have a set with the brackets thanks to Elanfan1 on here, they just need recovering which I am going to have done with the matching headlining material, I know this may not be correct but I think they will look good when finished.

Cheers
