The repros are crap...some even have spelling mistakes!

Are you serious? Delicately restore it. What's the problem?

Just trying to gauge the mood for using the old battered, nibbled, faded VIN plate in a shiny new engine bay!

Well, my shoddy old one always caught my eye every time I opened the bonnet. I bought a repro. and had it engraved to match exactly. I like it.........but I have saved the old one.

Same here..... nice repro with proper engraving, but the original is in a safe place.

You dont have to get a cheap repro one, you can get a new one from Lotus. Just go to a recognised dealer (I used Paul Mattey) with your evidence i.e original details, log book etc and they will send off for one for you. It comes already engraved with your details. I cant remember how much it cost it wont be cheap repro cost but i dont remember it being silly money.

[quote="Keith Scarfe"] Just go to a recognised dealer (I used Paul Mattey) quote]

Is Paul Matty an official Lotus dealer? :? I thought he was just a Lotus specialist with no ties to the factory but I could be wrong, I believe Chris Neil is an official dealer.

I didnt think any of the classic vendors were 'official' thats why I used 'recognised'. Anyway Mattey got one for me. Just to add however this was probably 8-9 years ago now so not sure if they would currently do the same, you would have to ask. Seems like only the other year I did all this.

Along these lines, any source for the plate that indicates settings for ignition timing and all--for the Federal cars? Mines tattty but did use new VIN plate and looks horrible with raggedy emissions plate. Gordon Sauer

Some look better than others but I like the character, the history, the patina that these original tags bring to an Elan. New paint is beautiful, and new tag says something entirely different. Especially when an early Elan displaying a stamped tag.

I am missing the vin tag so it will be a miss match like Gordons.

I'm not what anyone would call an originality specialist.
However I put the tatty VIN plate back in after the rebuild to retain a bit of "Patina"

Would you replace the tag on this Elite to gussy up the engine bay?
