The boot lid elan s3 (hinges recessed?) trivia

PostPost by: lotustastic » Tue Sep 16, 2014 1:47 am

Hello,

I own a project 1969 (built in 67) elan s3 ss model. As my boot lid has many stress cracks and requires fiberglassing, I noticed that there were recessed portions for the boot hinges to fit into on the boot lid which had been filled with bondo filler. My question is whether the boot lid should have recessed portions from the factory, is this original or modified by previous owner/user, lover and investor of bondo filler? :)
BTW, I am removing all unnecessary filler and repairing fiberglass the proper way while removing many lbs of clay filler in the process.
Also, if anyone has dimensions on where the hinge holes are located (inches or cm from boot lid edge, etc) , that would be great..
Thanks for your guidance

I'm close to finishing my restoration of a 1966 S3 Coupe. I have pictures and can give you details of the hinge holes and recess locations when I return to East Tennessee at the weekend. If you expand the top pic you should get some idea of the recess slots in the lid. I will take the measurements and forward them to you.

Hi David,
My S3 has recesses on the boot lid for the hinges. I suggest that you sit the lid in position with the gaps nice and even and then sit the hinges in the recesses and mark the positions of the studs for drilling. That way you are sure that the fitment will be correct for your car. You can elongate the holes slightly if necessary.

This should help you rough it in but it looks like measuring from the left they're at like 5 3/8 and then 34 5/8. Elongated as noted and yes certainly fit it before you start to button it down. I also plan to do some reinforcing underneath where in on my +2 I used aluminum reinforcing plates on the top hole and built up fiberglass on the trunk holes. Gordon Sauer

Note that the body is also recessed for its portion of the hinge. From memory, it was about .10 inch deep. When I restored my SS in 1985, I had filled the front part of the body recess. Then in assembly, the hinge wouldn't go far enough forward and chipped the paint. I fixed it this last time, just a little more forward clearance.

That's a tenth of an inch, not 10mm.
