Is this an original gear knob?

PostPost by: 661 » Fri Mar 23, 2018 6:44 pm

I have a S2 and was hoping for the correct one, this has not been advertised as S2 but is said to be 'original Lotus Elan'.
Given that the pear shaped knob was late S1 to early S3 , it might do the job.
However , I thought the original had silver script, not gold?
Additionally the threaded part doesn't look as I recall.
What say the experts?
(It was claimed to have been bought early 80's from Chris Neil)

Check this thread out, lotus-talk-f50/sherlock-wanted-which-gear-knob-incorrect-t36430.html
trw99 has a link to an article he wrote for Club Lotus News, you may find it helpful.

Thanks Tim,
That's very kind.
Over the years I've saved articles for this very moment. However, Tim's (twr99) article and some of the others are not entirely clear in their pictures. I can't quite see the colour of the script.
I suspect I have a genuine Lotus replacement but from the early eighties. Let's see what the others add.
Thanks again.

Interesting thread and I am reassured by Tim's work on this!

I bought one of the correct ones (on an educated guess) from Paul Matty (although I am not sure of the silver or gold finishing as it is in a box 600 km away (I could not find it on the PM website this morning to give the link).

Based on what I've been told and through observation, on original items the letter "C" tips protrude into the letter "B" on all badges, shift knobs, hub caps, horn push. Check out an original hub cap or nose badge for reference. There are always a few items on eBay that the seller states "new" but does not say original. So my best guess is, based on the 3rd picture which is a little fuzzy, that this one may be new but may not be an original.
