Lotus Elan

Tonneau install

PostPost by: seniorchristo » Sat Jun 16, 2018 5:30 pm

I’ve decided to install the tonneau on my Elan S3 myself. Can someone recommend a source for the leather punch needed to do this?
Thanks :)

Chris

This is probably what you need

https://www.woolies-trim.co.uk/product/ ... ting-punch

but I'm sure http://rdent.com/ will stock what you need and the postage will be less!!

Chris
I used one of these in a screwdriver holder
https://www.amazon.com/4-Piece-Plug-Cut ... B00BFY3DQ8
Using it a bit like a bradawl. I am sure there is a proper tool out there but it did work really really well.

Good luck

Thanks all!
I ordered this from Amazon

Looks like it can also be used to cut holes in gaskets. :)

I don't know if you have ever done this. There are some tricks. I have done lots.

You start at the middle, working your way towards the outside. Doing one then the other closest to the middle switching back and forth from one side to the other.

You use masking tape on the underside of the tonneau. Pressing down on the tonneau where the masking tape is on the underside of the tonneau. Pulling it tight as you do one then the next. The masking tape will indent so you know exactly where to put the fastener.

That is about all. Very simple if you take your time.

Thanks for the tips Tony! It's my first attempt but I'm pretty sure I'll be more finicky than the shop I talked with. I'm also going to wait for a hot sunny day. It looks like it needs to stretch a few inches to fit properly. :)

To cut screw/bolt holes in a Gasket, place the Gasket on the part it is to fit and place a Ball Bearing over the hole.

Tap the Ball Bearing with small Hammer and the hole is cut

Well I completed the install. Yesterday was perfect in PA, sunny and 95 degrees F. Thanks for all suggestions to assist. I'm quite happy with the results and I highly recommend the everflex tonneau supplied by Paul Matty. Just be sure to order the extra zippers. Also be specific about your seat type. I ordered mine for a US LHD S3 but they were going to send me one for an S4 (high back seats). :)

yes, looks fantastic. I learned the hard way to start from the middle. On my Sprint (now in the hands of Tom S down in Houston) I started from the side and when I got to the other side I was way off.

Looks like a great job. Glad I could pass along some tips to you.

I have just ordered one of these, can you explain the issue of the zippers.

Also do you have a photo from the side of the car with the cover in place?
