A couple of solutions here:

I've since made a bracket for the Corvette switch from a Ford Zodiac headlight switch and mounted it
in the oem location with an oem knob. My pods (failsafe) now stay down for weeks.

One alternative might be to buy an ordinary plumbing Gas valve and modify the shaft so that the ordinary knob fits on it. Then you would raise/lower the lights by twisting the knob instead of pulling it.
However I'm not sure that two-way gas valves exist, I'll search.
Or two of these would do for an electric solution, plumb one to suck the air out of the pods and a second to let the air back in. Only $1.99 each.

Find a switch with centre-off and momentary up-on and down-on like the window switches to operate the valves. Or make one using microswitches with the old broken manual vacuum valve.

Well, I`ve been around to see my new best mate; John Clegg. What a gentleman. I tried his refurbished switch which worked perfectly and he set to work on mine. Gently tapping all 4 sides of all 4 rivets with a hammer and short screwdiver, the cover levered off. He trued up the top plate and polished the inside with emery to an almost mirror finish.
I`ve been back an hour, the pods are still up. Result.
3 cheers for John Clegg.

Couldn't have done - it wasn't electrical.
