S4 Windscreen Washer Jets

PostPost by: AHM » Tue Apr 23, 2013 10:43 pm

What are the various original styles of washer jet used on the S4?

At Donnington I saw 4 types
Chrome - I assumed these to be new replacements
Plastic 'Divers helmet' shaped - These are the rare ones
Plastic 'Hexagon nut' with a ball in the middle - are these correct
Plastic 'fried egg' with a ball in the middle - are these correct ? they are available

When I started my restoration I had one Divers Helmet and one Hexagon nut style - they were tatty and odd ?.so I took them off with a paint stripping chisel.

This is the best photo I have to hand - sorry about the quality. I think it's the same washer that was fitted to Mini's and therefore is now difficult to find.

I can take some more detailed photos today if you want.

The Hexagon nut with the ball in the middle is what came on my Sprint. I replaced them with the chrome ones.

It is a while since I saw the correct diver's helmet type of washer jet.

Are these correct? Did I get lucky? Or have I paid too much for the wrong ones?

I have the same combination on my S4, one chrome, one hex. Would love to track down another chrome, or at least two similar. Dan

Simon - the dome headed ones are indeed correct and the ones on a MK1 mini are similar but i believe they don't have the same thread length on them. Because on Mini's they only had to pass through a small amount of steel rather than the thickness of the fibreglass the Elan ones were a bit longer. I measured the thread on these ones and it was a smidgen under a half inch. I believe also that the wing nuts are correct too.

Thanks Steve,

By my usual standards they were a little pricey! So I'm relieved that they are correct. Although the one on my car had a nut, wing nuts make more sense - I might have been able to undo it.

These are just under 1/2" thread and the rest of the stalk brings it up to 1"

Personally I prefer the metal chrome ones and they are more robust.
