Hello Fellow Enthusiasts; Looking at the possible purchase of a 1962 Lotus Elite, car is missing ALL the glass..."front", "back" & "both window glass".

question "1"...Is the glass virtually "Unobtainable"???!!!

"2"...What price from the purchase price of the car should be deducted due to ALL the missing glass?...essentially asking...What's the value of ALL the missing glass?...Thanks Guys & Gals...Mates & Lasses ...depending upon your..."Side of the pond" :D  ...Mark

The best resource for Lotus Elite information is Mike Ostrov. He is located here in Northern CA.

He sometimes posts on this forum. mikeostrov at WebTV.net

In the UK a specialist is "Miles Wilkins Fibre Glass Services". For sure he can help, give him a call.

I like the description that it's 'rust free'! Looks like a great project, but I'd want that chassis plate and some documentation before handing over any readies. And have a much closer look at the bodyshell. As an ex-racer, there could be a lot of horrors hiding under that primer and paint that's left on the shell.

The place to go for parts is Mk14 Components in the UK:

And of course Miles Wilkins as mentioned above.

Some bits are just about impossible to buy for an Elite, so if you're still interested in a project car, make sure you know how complete it is, and what the hard to find bits are. Also figure in the cost of restoration, which can be much higher than an Elan, especially if the body needs a lot of work, or the bonded in engine / supension mounts are bent or rusty. Parts generally are a fair bit more than Elan stuff as well.

Mark,
If I wrote the advertisement I would have been a bit more specific, one presumes the seller meant that the front "ski" and the door hinge/windscreen supports are free of rust and not causing delamination. Amusing nonetheless. The seller also noted that the double dimples denote a Series 2 CBU. That actually denotes a later Series 2 CBU, perhaps after 1600. Mine, 1771, is a double dimple shell.

I would definitely want a detailed look, Russ. Cars with a competition history can be a real nightmare!

$45K for a Climax Elite? Cheap, cheap, cheap. No wonder it sold to Europe, had I seen it I would have had it and worried about glass later. Paul Matty had several in his showrooms, admittedly well restored, last year for ?90K+

Sadly the car I've lusted for since high school stays a bit too expensive for me to justify owning it. When I was young and just worrying about living is when I should have bought one. One can't turn around without tripping over AC Cobra replica's....wish someone would do the Elite!

There have been replicas, here's one I saw at the Brands Hatch Lotus Festival a couple of years ago, based on a triumph GT6.

Oh, that looks very nice Alan! GT6 mechanical's would make it a pretty good car though I think I would prefer a close copy of Chapman's creation.

Still, not around anymore?

Well...SADLY for ME :( :( :( ...the Lotus is being prepared to be shipped to the new French owner in France as the car qualifies to race in various prestigious vintage races.

Interestingly Mike Ostrov did view & inspect the car & it does have racing provenance ....

The proverbial "Early bird gets the worm" did have merit in this example...

Have to reset my alarm clock to the "Wee hours of the morn"...

Did I mention...DAMN French!!! :D
