Carnaby Street 1968 - Where is the Elan now ?

PostPost by: AlfaLofa » Fri Jan 28, 2011 2:31 pm

I've just bought a book on London in the 20th century.

This photo is included in the book - I subsequently found the picture on the internet.

The current owner of NMY 97E might be interested

Great shot Steve

The car is still listed on the DVLA site, but has not been taxed since March 1994. It was first registered on 23 March 1967 in London SE District and judging by the wheels would appear to be a standard S3 Elan.

It's probably lurking in a barn waiting to be discovered!

I hope you're right, but I suspect it was sold to Japan and lost... I sold my beloved S3 SE DHC in 1990 to a Japanese gentleman, the same info shows up on the DVLA website. I just recently bought a one owner from new S2 from the US, the car started life in the UK, but in the early 70's the owner moved to the US and took the car with him, he passed away last year and the car is now on it's way home - so I guess it makes it one all.

By the way - I love the photo! Swinging London...1966 - the world cup - the Beatles, the Stones - what's not to like?

BTW twenty-six year ago I can remember talking to a well known Lotus specialist in west Yorkshire that refused to believe standard S3's and early S4's had bolt on wheels.

I LOVE that photo! I went on vacation to England in 1968 with my family (I was 15) and bought two ties on Carnaby Street that I still own... somewhere. Groovy!

UPDATE: Hey, I just found my ties, and they were purchased at John Stephen (the shop shown in the photo.) Extra Groovy! Does that make me a Mod?

Well I just walked down Oxford Street today and it's plastered with hundreds of Union flags.

My ancestry isnt from these isles, but I'm born and bred and proud to fly the flag.

Johnny Clegg - no relation to the famous South African then:)

With a monica like Mazzini could be you have Italiano origins?,no problem there ,it's just the lazy ignorant bone-idle and sometimes illegal (would it be racist to say) "immigrants" who come to this country just for the wonderful benefits we dole out, clogging up our National Health Service and all the other freebies, without intending to integrate or contribute (claiming they are refugees from "this and that"), that wind me up when they try playing the "racist card", when we try to celebrate one of Englands cultural icons.......

That's better off my chest..

Now John -- I never said you were -you see to accuse someone of racism is negative and judgemental -and always gets a denial -----but to make them feel guilt for the actions of their predecessors[ over which we have no control] is acceptable and gets the same result - just a heads up on the new nomenclature and tactics -- ----I just threw out my bell bottom pants - leisure suits and wide paisley ties --the kids would wear them for Halloween so that was my first clue -some needy person is going to walk around looking like a refugee from club 54 -DISCO IS DEAD -ed

Yes, well; let's get back to Carnaby Street and the swingin' 60s, eh?
