Elan Flairs - the good the bad and some ugly ones

PostPost by: garyeanderson » Fri Sep 03, 2010 10:14 pm

This topic seems to have all but died so it time to kick this old dog and see if there's any life left. I was out looking around else where today as there didn't seem to be much going on and I visited an old haunt and saw this beauty. It doesn?t get much better than this when you find photos of an early Elan that been modified in the period and as much info presented in the many photos as there is here.

So does anyone recognize this car?
Vin plate with most of the info intact

Stylish period flairs

Cooling ducts

Rollover bar and mag wheels

eyebrow front flair

rather large rear flairs

Looks Aggressive, doesn't it

Nice interior that hasen't been to badly modified but still pretty original

So I was able to add on more S1-S2 to my data base that Frank Bertrang was kind enough to give us before his passing and maybe someday it will be completed, probably not in my lifetime at the rate Elan Roadster's are added but such is life.

Here is a very early S1 with flares it has had as far back as anyone can find. Belongs to Fred Hansen here in Colorado and is on eBay now.

This Early S2 was at Lime Rock on Saturday and IO took a couple of pictures. I guess I can say it is RED and it has some flairs. Other photos will be discussed in another topic.

Evan,

Good one! They really are Cibie "Super Oscar" driving lights and they really do the job. Like landing lights on a jet plane!!

Another one for the collection. Done quite a while ago. The flaring was very gradual around the front tires. From the back, it was gradual over the rear tires as well, but then terminated right at the doors.

A couple of more for the collection from LOG30. The car is a dedicated hillclimb car that started as an S3/S4 SS.

This thread is always of interest, a pic of my S2 with what I believe are 26R guards. The rear guards add around 5-6 inches to the rear of the elan.

No clarko, not a Shapecraft - in fact, don't even go there! (Well, if you must, do a search on Shapecraft on here and then sit down with a glass of something strong to read the posts).

The photo of Emerson Fittipaldi was taken after he won the Rothmans 50,000 Formule libre race at Brands. Not a lot is known about which company made the +2 estate version featured. Robinshaw & Ross hazard that it might have been a Lotus prototype, others that it may have been a conversion carried out by a dealer.

Here is a photo of my fathers' '67 S3. He installed the flares in the early 70s to accompany wider tires. In this picture the car is up on blocks; We were changing the rear suspension from donuts to a CV setup. Along with a new rollbar, brakes, etc.

.. Yes flares were trendy in the 1970's. I suppose they may come back into fashion again :D
