Lotus Elan

Elan Registry - New Features

The discussion that led to the registry had this goal as a foundation. The authoritative guides try and paint the history of the cars as sequential with logical changes in models and build specifications. We've seen examples on the list where cars are "wrong" according to the guide but there they are in real life. The registry is an attempt to document those changes, to find out where the cars have ended up and to give us something to talk about.

I would take issue with you about all Sprints being S4s. If that were so, Lotus would have marketed them as S4s, surely. The Sprint was an upgrade in the same way that say, a Mini Cooper was upgraded to Cooper S spec.

The main reasons for my anorakish distinction for the S4/Sprint is to provide guidelines to potential owners when some sellers try to pass their S4 off as a Sprint; to also provide some historical accuracy and to record for future Elan enthusiasts how their car originally left the factory.

Does it matter? As far as driving the car is concerned, nope, not a jot; all Elans are great to drive. As far as understanding the context in which the cars left the factory and what was going on there at the time, I would argue yep, it is of interest - though admittedly to just a few nerds like me!

Have a great New Year!

Tim

I agree that buyers should beware cars masquerading as Sprints (and paying hiked prices) and your guidance is certainly helpful. I painted my own S4 Yellow over white with Sprint style stripes but I determined it would say "Elan" on the doors and not "Elan Sprint" Purists may frown but it's my car and I think the two-tone scheme just looks so nice on an Elan but it is not intended to deceive.

I may be wrong but I have always understood the (factory) Sprint to be a sprint spec' S4 (in other words a S4 Sprint)

Otherwise I'm sure Lotus would have designated it as a S5.

We classic car enthusiasts are all anoraks

I do understand the distinction you are making and it is part of the Elan history so is worthy of note (despite my views on the matter :) )

Anyway, as I say I do like your website and wish you a great new years motoring

Hi all,
I have not been on the registry for a while but have just discovered new information about my S4 but cannot get onto the site. I keep getting the 403 denied access screen. Would appreciate someone sending me a link to the site.
Cheers

I was getting an error message that the sign-on page was not secure and my pass-word could be compromised. It doesn't do it now but I don't know why it stopped.

Jim,

Great registry, many thanks for setting it up. There seem to be quite a few duplicate entries, any idea why? For accuracy's sake isn't it worth editing them out?

Best regards,

Hi Jim, thanks for the quick reply.
This is what I get on screen even when I used the link you sent me. ( Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server.)
I had my local IT friend look at it and he feels the issue must be in the works at my service provider and is still looking into it.
Cheers
Ian
P.S. I was going to add the body number but is there a column to do this.

It depends. Some of the duplicates are valid and show a cars history. For example:

Others are because the owner entered the car twice with different information. I go through on occasion (rare occasion) and delete those. I should find a better way but it hasn't been an urgent issue for me. I am looking for someone to take over and/or help...hint hint

Add the body number to the comments. One day I'll add that to a field.

I'm not sure what's going on and have added some additional error checks. Give it a try again

Hi,

I have been trying to sign up for the Elan Registry but the sign-up page tells me that my website is not valid. I am not sure why but it may be because it ends in ".us" not ".com". The site does not let me sign up without a web page.

What can I do to sign up?

Thanks,

JAS

You don't need to enter anything in the website field, it's the only field not required. (See the screenshot) I made an account with an email that ended in .us so you should be fine. If that doesn't work send me a screen shot.
