Hi Everyone

Looks like this is true see here:-
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/cla ... -1974.html

Now to re-open an old topic which might now take on new relevance.
My car, although first registered in June 74, was actually built in 1973 according to it's chassis number ( ie 7312****/* and so, as I understand things, should be elageable for free road tax. Could someone therefore please explain how I go about sorting this out to the satisfaction of the DVLA

Thanks very much
Andy

Andy

Your car was built in December 1973. To be eligible under current rules, your car has to have been made before 1 Jan 73.

There are news stories that the budget yesterday moved the date:
"from April 2014 any car manufactured before January 1 1974 will be entitled to a free tax disc. "

But I personally have not yet been able to find that statement in any listing of the budget speech.

Andy, if your car was not registered until 1974, I think to avoid any arguement with DVLA you need to get a letter from the Lotus Historian, declaring that your car was built in 1973.

Well, it's not clear where this story comes from. This I guess, is the official version of the Budget speech:
http://www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/budget2013_statement.htm
and this classic car date extension is not mentioned as far as I can tell (by searching for cars or 1974 or manufactured). Lets hope it was not part of a leaked early speech and then dropped from the actual budget.

Ah, found it in the full text of the Budget statement on the Treasury Website. Look for VED (Vehicle Excise Duty)

http://www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/budget2013_documents.htm
2.148 VED: classic vehicle exemption ? The Government will extend the cut off date
from which classic vehicles are exempt from VED by one year. From 1 April 2014 a vehicle
manufactured before 1 January 1974 will be exempt from paying VED. (Finance Bill 2014)

Hi Again

Thanks for the info everyone but just to clarify what I'm asking

I know it's currently possible to get exemption from UK road tax with a '73 registered car if it can be shown to be built in '72. What I'm asking is for someone who's already been though this process to let me know the details of exactly what required. Is it simply a case of getting a letter from the Lotus historian which states a car month and year of manufacture, if so, what has to be done then.

I do appreciate this issue has been covered in the past, but if the date for road tax exemption is moving forward by one year (which it looks like it almost certainly is) then I imagine there'll be a lot of people in the same situation as myself so I thought I bring it up again as I can see it becoming quite topical again soon.

Andy
I went through the process a couple of years ago with my Sprint, which was registered early 1973.
I got a letter from Club Lotus to the effect that all Sprints were manufactured before the end of 1972. The Lotus historian wasn't able to help.
I filled out the relevant form and took this + Club Lotus letter to the local DVLC office and no more road tax!!

Club Lotus are able to help and the factory can give you a letter too. You then have to argue your case with DVLA.

In Richard's case above there was a time when one of the past Lotus archivists put into writing that all Sprints were made in 72. We now know that not to be the case.

Just to confirm - a letter from Lotus confirming the date of manufacture is required. The history file for my (until very recently) plus 2 contains a letter from Lotus confirming that the car was made in Nov 72. After some to and fro correspondence DVLC accepted this and classified the car as tax free.

Good luck

Hi Everyone

Done a bit of checking up and, as far as I can tell, what's required is for the DVLA to change the taxation class of the car from "Private Light Goods (PLG)" to "Historic Vehicle". This they will do for a '73 built car even if it was first registered in '74 provided you give them a suitable letter from say Club Lotus confirming this.

The only slight problem I can see is that there might be a bit of a delay since although you can get a letter sorted in advance, the DVLA won't change the taxation class until after 1st April 14 as the car isn't a "Historic Vehicle" until then
