So from what I'm gathering the identification plate is in the engine bay, possibly in the door. And there is the chassis number and engine number also, the latter appearing on the plate(s) as well as -- presumably -- somewhere on the engine itself..

Basically yes, door opening plate (& windshield Vin plate) are late (1970+) federal only.
