Loved the write up from someone who truly understands all the quirks and nuances of Elan handling. The one thing not commented on was the difference in left versus right hand corners as the driver weight is so significant. I am surprised at the wheel lift with the driver on the inside in one of the photos. You are either going much harder than I can or your rear roll stiffness is a little to soft and its sitting down on the outside rear IMHO. i guess depends a lot on the tyres your running also

Thanks to those who added photos and comments about the performance of 26-R-9 at the Goodwood Members Meeting. I would have loved to seen it all in person. Thanks to the Goodwood Organization for allowing us to watch live all round the globe.
Some additional comments:
Except for the high cost I wish period Dunlop tires were used here in the States on 60s sports and GT cars. The sight of those cars sliding though every corner at Goodwood is just amazing. I could watch it over and over.
Its worth noting the 8th grid time of the Elan vs the 29 competitors. Just 2.4 seconds behind cars with 6 or 8 cylinders and more that 4200cc engines.
And the resulting 8th place finish after 45 minutes of racing.
My guess the Cobra Camp is shaking their heads about that race winning TVR Griffith 400 and its fastest race lap a full second faster than the others.

In fairness, the two Cobras leading were ahead until the driver change; and the second driver in the lead car wasn't anything like as quick as Pirro and it dropped back quite a bit. The fastest times were set at the end of the race on lowest fuel.
But nonetheless the TVR was very fast and caused a bit if a stir I'm sure.

Re; The winning TVR, I do believe it is the chief adversary of Paul Tooms who has posted up here from time to time. You can see it in some of Paul's video's. (Money into noise) on Youtube.
To say it is well sorted is an understatement. I don't know of another TVR that can touch it, I have seen it first hand it's a flyer.
Doug.

I take my hat off to the Cobra drivers-despite the way it appears, leaf-sprung Cobras are a pig to drive at high speed! I spent some time with CSX2151 "The Hairy Canary" when it was here in Vancouver and drove it at Westwood, our local track. After several years of racing sports-racers it was a major disappointment-especially in corners. But when you got it pointed in a straight line...

One of the original stab and steer cars. I can echo your comments, as I owned CSX 2176 back in the late 60's. That was when they were not very expensive. I only paid $3800 for mine in a take over payments deal. Cheaper than a new Elan.

Ray Cook who owned CSX2151 paid $5000 or so dollars in the mid seventies-when I drove it it was just an old race car. After Ray did something silly and his now ex-wife ended up with the car it was for sale for $20,000 in about 1982. I had the money but Ray was a friend...

De ja happened to me also. The former Mrs. got it in a divorce settlement. Actually it was a good decision both ways. It was she who wanted the Cobra in the first place. Even back then I told her to hang on to it as long as she could, because it was going to go up in value. She eventually sold it, and it was sold again to Lynn Park, who must own a bajillion 289s. What was really cool, was we owned the Cobra at the same time we owned the Super 7. Pick your fun.

A very interesting and informative article.
The photo showing the car in its Modsports days shows it had an S3/4 FHC body at that time.
