Need Photos of S2 Engine Bay

PostPost by: WilST » Tue Jun 06, 2017 4:55 am

I'm straightening out the PO-altered engine bay of my S2, need some good detailed photos of the engine bay of a stock LHD S2. I've several Elan books, but none of them have such photos, not even the wonderful Buckland book.

If you have them, I'd appreciate it if you would post good detailed pictures here of your LHD S2 engine bay. Or, does anyone know of an Elan book that has detailed photos of an S2 engine bay?
Thanks, Wil

Wil, I hope these help as a starting point. They are images taken from road tests of the S2 at the time, so the set up is original, as they came from the factory. The first two are of LHD cars.

Not focused on S2s, but don't forget this thread:

I've found it very useful on several occasions.

Very nice, and helpful pictures. The head casting has the extra bosses beside the plugs which were generally early production showing up on S1 and some early S2 cars. The lower photo shows the optional radio interference suppression plate. Note: that the factory cars always had the plug wires wrapped around the back of the head, not over the top. Does anyone know if there were differences on S1 engine compartment layouts? Does anyone have original S1 engine compartment pictures?

Wil

The first 2 pictures are correct for your purpose and identical to my factory correct #26/0538, a 63 elan. The engine bay of the S1-S2 did not change 'till the S3 came about as far as I am aware.

Until the Sprint came along, when they started to lead the plugs directly over the UK drivers side cam cover and straight down to the distributor.

S1 engines below.

Surely the spark leads via-the-back routing was so that the radio-suppressor plate could be fitted?

Tim, NIck, Bill, thanks muchly for the link and photos. I got several good ones off the 'Lotus-Talk' link. The issue in particular I'm having is that the PO messed up the brake lines when his mechanic decided to re-do them in steel (see photo). I want to put them back to a stock installation using cunifer, but need a detailed photo of the engine bay left side of a LHD S2. The photos I collected with your help are good but not close-up enough.

Bill, I see you're on Vancouver Island, I live in Stanwood, WA which is about forty minutes south of Bellingham. Do you ever take your S2 over to the mainland, or are you thinking of going to the Western Washington ABFM with your S2 this July?

Thanks All,
Wil

The brake lines are still on my S2 and have been for a VERY long time so I expect they are original. The engine is out so I should be able to get some close up shots to post or send to you. If you PM your email to me then I will try to get some good pictures in the next weeks and send them to you. I will post some here as well for reference.
