Wiper self parking stopped working

PostPost by: alexblack13 » Thu Sep 18, 2014 6:16 pm

Hi guys.... A wee issue..

All is well with the little car and it has had some use in the last few weeks with the nice weather n all.. Bought a new pair of 'speedwipers' from Sue Miller and fitted them Braw! but then the auto park stopped working!! Even with the wipers off the screen! So its not the drag difference methinks.

Walked away at that point. Check it out tomorrow. I suspect a connection or earth problem.

Any ideas guys..

Alex

Here is a good article on how the electrics work - but beware - the wiring colours are for a TR6.

For a Plus 2, the wires on the switch are Light Green, Green, Yellow and Blue/Yellow and on the wiper terminal block:

? #1 Earth (Black)
? #2 Park (Blue/Yellow)
? #3 2nd Speed (Lt Green)
? #4 Ignition Power In (Green)
? #5 1st Speed (Yellow)

The fault finding at the end is good.

My wipers did not park - it turned out be the park switch which clips on to the motor and can be got from fleabay for quite cheaply:

Hope this helps

Richard

Had the same thing with the Mini - turned out to be the park switch too as Richard said, simple swap.

The Plus 2 occasionally carries on wiping for a bit after switching them off, only in heavy rain though and I suspect it's water getting into the terminal block as a bit of vaseline seems to make it stop for a while.

Cheers

No Obvious connection problems to be seen. So it looks like I will need to remove the motor and check it out. Wondering whether to bother as its not difficult to stop the wipers in the right place.

However me being me (if I get to feeling a little better) I wont be able to ignore it.

Anyone any tips? Looks like a straightforward if a bit footery job.. Then bench test / repair...

Does one need to slacken off the dash and pull forward? Can the glovebox be removed in situ?

All those sort of questions really... Tips badly needed..

Not looking forward to it one little bit... LOL

Alex

The park switch can be removed from the outside of the motor. It is clipped on and, with a bit of effort, slides off. It is the bit that the wiring harness connects into. It slides along it long axis away from the motor. Then you can disconnect three wires on spade connectors that go inside the motor.

So if you can access that switch,by loosening the bolts - that is the way to go. It is almost certainly the item at fault (assuming the connector is sending the right voltage etc..

Alternatively, you could buy a Plus 2 - at least the wiper motor is in the engine bay!

Good luck

Easy said! I can't even see the thing!!

I will get round to it.. Thinking about unbolting the motor mount to get some more room to footer...

Thanks bud.

The self park feature of windscreen wipers is often fed from a permanently-on circuit so that they will continue to park if ignition is switched off.

The sensible ones have a fuse in that permanently-on circuit.

So it may be that such a fuse has blown, which can happen if a wiper blade sticks to the windscreen, stalling the motor.

find the terminal on the wiper motor that feeds the self park, feed it 12 volts see if it parks. If yes, start tracking back. IIRC it comes from the switch, but it has been a while

There may be an inline fuse hidden away.

I've had all the wiring down from behind the glovebox to check for any loose con's etc. no luck

Remember it was I that fitted the new loom and wiring.. I know whats there exactly. So .. Sadly no inline fuses hidden away...

I am going to remove the glove box (somehow!) and loosen off the motor clamping then I will take off the rack tube fastener at the motor and unhook the rack from the drive peg. Motor will come out then. And as you know refitting is just the reversal of the removal.. How difficult is that?

LOL...

The Haynes (and others!) finest examples of over simplification !!

If only... lol.. They have some sense of humour eh?

Question... Anybody managed to remove the glove box with dash in situ ? More or less anyway.
